Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

There are usually limits on numbers of stops on transatlantic fares - not so keen on people bouncing around the place on extra flights. I don't think you'll be able to force the two together

I think this is probably my fifth post ever. I'm a newcomer but have been following for a while.

So I'm planning to be in the US in October. At the moment, my best options are DUB-DTW LAX-LHR in Y - £500ish. I have to be in LAS in between that so I was looking at the options and I can do a pretty nice run from DTW to LAS (DTW-DFW-MCO-MIA-LAX-LAS stop LAS-LAX) - £667 (450 TPs). I've been looking at ways to combine this with my flights from the UK as one big set but I'm struggling. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

Dates are 17th October to DTW, out to LAS on 20th and return from LAX on either 27th/28th.

Thanks,

Gaz
You can probably get two transfers in the USA on your transatlantic fare.

If you want both your trips on one ticket for connections protection, that is probably do-able (not necessarily but it is usually allowed)—but you'll need to phone BA or use a travel agent.

Can you please help and point me in the direction of how one gets close to that fare for 80 TP. The best out and back fare to either JER or AMS seems to be £500+.

With my current travel schedule I am stuck about 70 TP short to renew GGL by September. Any ideas would be appreciated, and I don't want to spend too much time in the air.

Thanks, Monkville

I'm intrigued by this - is it possible for BA to construct an itinerary with multiple fares on it? For example, would it be possible to book say a UK-OSL-UK fare and a nested exOSL to Australia fare on the one ticket but with the price as the sum of the two separate fares? This sounds too good to be true but would definitely give a lot more peace of mind in the case of IRROPS!

Ok thanks.

How weirded out/cool with are BA phone line people with you doing an obvious tier run?

I would be surprised if the above example would be allowed, although I have never actually inquired myself. If it was, surely everyone on here would be doing it, and the world would be a better place

Differing fares can go on the same tickets, but in the above, the sequence flown would not be correct in order to construct the fares that are available when booked separately I don't think.

Yes: but how fares can be combined is often limited.

On transatlantic fares, the usual rule for I-fares within the oneworld joint venture (as far as I can see) is that there may be only two international fare components on the ticket.

In your example, BA INCEU28 on OSL-SYD includes the following rule:

Code:
COMBINATIONS
   END-ON-END
END-ON-END COMBINATIONS PERMITTED. VALIDATE ALL FARE
     COMBINATIONS.
     PROVIDED -
       COMBINATIONS ARE FOR CARRIER BA
OR FOR CARRIER IB IN ANY RULE IN ANY TARIFF.
   END-ON-END
     END-ON-END COMBINATIONS PERMITTED WITH DOMESTIC
FARES. VALIDATE ALL FARE COMPONENTS. SIDE TRIPS NOT
     PERMITTED.
     PROVIDED -
COMBINATIONS ARE FOR ANY CARRIER WITH ANY RULE IN
       ANY PUBLIC TARIFF.
   OPEN JAWS
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
-TO FORM SINGLE OR DOUBLE OPEN JAWS
A MAXIMUM OF TWO INTERNATIONAL FARE COMPONENTS
PERMITTED. MILEAGE OF THE OPEN SEGMENT MUST BE EQUAL/
LESS THAN MILEAGE OF THE LONGEST FLOWN FARE
      COMPONENT.
     PROVIDED -
       WHEN THE OPEN SEGMENT OCCURS
-BETWEEN AREA 2 AND AREA 3
-WITHIN EUROPE OR WITHIN AREA 3 COMBINATIONS ARE
WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER BA/IB IN ANY RULE AND
        TARIFF.
   ROUND TRIPS/CIRCLE TRIPS
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
     -TO FORM ROUND TRIPS
     -TO FORM CIRCLE TRIPS
A MAXIMUM OF TWO INTERNATIONAL FARE COMPONENTS
      PERMITTED.
     PROVIDED -
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER BA
OR FOR CARRIER IB IN ANY RULE AND TARIFF.
Which looks good! However, we would have to find a LHR-OSL fare that was also mutually compatible.

Unfortunately, the entire BA European fare tariff seems to exclude this kind of arrangement. IB allows it but only on their full J fares, which is not so useful.

e.g., even full Y on LHR-OSL limits you to combinations within Europe only.

Code:
COMBINATIONS
  OPEN JAWS/ROUND TRIPS/CIRCLE TRIPS/END-ON-END
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
-TO FORM SINGLE OR DOUBLE OPEN JAWS/ROUND TRIPS/
      CIRCLE TRIPSEND-ON-END COMBINATIONS PERMITTED.
      VALIDATE ALL FARE COMBINATIONS.
     PROVIDED -
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER BA
       BETWEEN UNITED KINGDOM AND LIBYA
OR FOR CARRIER BA WITHIN EUROPE
OR FOR CARRIER IB WITHIN EUROPE IN ANY RULE IN ANY
       TARIFF.
   OPEN JAWS/ROUND TRIPS/CIRCLE TRIPS
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
-TO FORM SINGLE OR DOUBLE OPEN JAWS/ROUND TRIPS/
      CIRCLE TRIPS.
     PROVIDED -
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER BA/IB
       IN ANY RULE IN TARIFF
EUROP1R - FARES BETWEEN POINTS IN EUROPE NOT FILED
       EURPBAR - WITHIN EUROPE-INTERNATIONAL
       IPREURP - WITHIN EUROPE-INTERNATIONAL.
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER BA
WITHIN EUROPE IN ANY RULE IN TARIFF
       FBRA2P - WITHIN AREA 2.
COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY FARE FOR CARRIER IB IN
       ANY RULE IN TARIFF
       IPREURP - WITHIN EUROPE-INTERNATIONAL.
IF THE FARE COMPONENT IS ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
ANY IB FLIGHT OPERATED BY IB
ANY IB FLIGHT OPERATED BY YW
ANY IB FLIGHT OPERATED BY I2
ANY IB FLIGHT OPERATED BY BA
ANY IB FLIGHT OPERATED BY CJ
               ANY BA FLIGHT.
Interestingly it is suggested you can combine with IB fares within Europe-International as a circle trip. I'll have a think about that.

Any suggestions for a TP-efficient trip in Jan/Feb ?

Hi,

I've just found out that I'm likely to be free for about 10 days roughly from mid-Jan to mid-Feb next year.

My EC year ends in March and by then I will be at approximately 1800 TPs. So I'm tempted to find a run at a good £/TP rate earning 700TPs, which I can do in about a week or so, which will get me to 2500 and a GUF.

I don't want to take the trip solely for the TPs, as the math doesn't really work (!), so somewhere warm would be good

I am London-based but can easily position for an ex-EU (even from CAI at a push)

Suggestions on a postcard please...

ex-ARN to BKK via DOH and HKG for about £900 in I on CX. Nets 640TPs and with positioning to ARN (2*40TPs would push you above 700 needed).

Also possible to add in a SIN stop on the return, making 680tp for £1396 or allowing you to route through LHR and drop the last leg to ARN and still bank 640.
Cheers pal. Much appreciated.

January I drop from Gold to Silver for the first time in 7 years or so. Decided to do most of my travel on miles this year, as I would not travel enough to secure gold again anyway.

So, early next year (Feb/March) I would have time to do a TP run from AMS to earn the 1500 TPs to qualify for Gold again. Either I buy a DONEx from JNB to earn it that way or I do a TP run. Willing to spend 2 weeks on it and about €5000, which would keep me just below the 3 GBP per TP limit.

What would you do ? Look for deals now ? Wait till the last moment ? RTW in J ?

I would love to have another ex-DUB deal again. Like this one...

£0.82/TP / £1170 / 1420TP / DUB HEL LHR (stop) LCY JFK PHX (stop) HNL PHX JFK LCY DUB / I J I A A A A I J / BA Call Centre (No booking fee) August 2015 I’m DUB based so a bargain / docgasman / AY BA AA US
If you find anything close, please PM me. I am incredibly stupid as far as finding these fares goes. Even if you spell them out (in your language) I can't seem to find them anywhere. I have about 200K miles to position myself....

Thanks in advance !

You will struggle to get a DONEx that even approaches the tier point / £ value of even a typical (non-sale price) I- class fare between Dublin and Hawaii/Alaska.

Probably the best value (if you can stomach it) would be Dublin to Hawaii, then inside that trip, go Hawaii to Caribbean.

Right now I would sit tight and see what fares come up.

Hence my plea to the wise and weirdly knowledgeable people who do TP runs....
