17.5" is the average 747 seat width, however. That .6" of a inch does make a difference...

That's not correct. I've never seen a 9 abreast 787 with seats wider than 17", and in most cases it's been less - bare in mind this is what I've seen in person (there are a lot of inaccurate measurements on sites like Seatguru etc.). I doubt 17.5" is even certifiable aisle-wise, for safety reasons, let alone not being able to get a trolly down them!

Seatguru says 17.5; Air Canada quotes 17.3 for their planes:

What you can be sure of is that the 8 across on JAL hardly looks luxurious!

I am surprised at the IFE boxes on an aircraft as new as the 787. I just thought Boeing would have worked with Rockwell Collins/Panasonic /Thales etc. to make the boxes smaller or under the cabin floor.
Airbus, on the other hand, has worked with the suppliers and the IFE boxes will not be in the way. It'll be all fiber.

I think the thing that annoys me the most about these is that BA make no effort to minimise the affect these boxes have on the passenger. They are large bare metal boxes with very sharp corners plonked right where your feet go.

On QR's 787s configured as 3-3-3 the seat cushion width is 16.9". The cushion extends under the arm rests so the arm-to-arm width is less.

Does anyone know what we can expect from the 789's as far as seat layouts? They aren't that much bigger than the 788's and they are fitted with a First cabin so will it be basically the same layout as right now but with an F cabin? The first 789 will arrive in less 10 months as long as there are no delays.

I believe so. I remember seeing a YouTube video on the BA 789 first cabin but it appears BA have removed the video... If not all then I'd say 14/16 out of the 22 will have the first cabin.
With so many compliments about the WT cabin on the 788 then it's only going to get worse. The 788 is only a fleet of 8 but adding the 789 will the fleet of 787's up to 30.

Just a comment about my 1st ever (and last) BA trip. I flew LHR-YYC and on the way there we had a really old B767 with dismal AVOD system. The food was plain horrible. However the staff was really stellar. On the way back, we had the 787...Wow! What a disaster seating plan..Super cramped, and the AVOD box underneath the seat in-front of you cuts your foot room by half. Didn't have the food (horrible experience on the way there). But again, the staff was amazing.
Too bad BA decided to operate the 787 on the LHR-YYC. I anticipated I will be doing that flight about 2 / month and sadly I will have to look for other alternatives.
^^^^^^ For BA staff ^^^^^
the 787 (economy class at least) and the food
