Design patent for the Club World seat revealed
 

Apologies if this has been posted before, but could this offer any insight into the next generation of BA club seats??

Thanks for posting, at first glance this looks really good! The worry I had was that I travel with Mrs gaxxy and so actually like the fact I'm not isolated from my travel companion but this design gets around that with the middle seats.

The first drawing reminds me of the Rolling Stones logo!

The drawing of the cabin layout makes me think 'sky-coffins'.

I'm sure they'll make it better, but the seat looks very uncomfortable for the lower back.

OK - I have now been through the whole of this patent. I am not aware that we have discussed this before.

It is clearly a BA filed patent. To me again BA have tried to cleverly use space as best as they can with the key thing here being that the space for the seat with the seat being unique as it "is a seat which is substantially wider than it is deep". Given the layouts in a cabin at the end of the patent this is clearly a J not F product (too many seats).

The overall shape looks great and the 2 dining options look really interesting. The only thing that I could not work out is does the seat now not recline at all (hence saving a huge amount of weight on motors etc)? If so then I guess that the curvilinear back of the seat will need some clever design to allow for a similar feeling to reclining the seat. Of course for BA the saving on maintenance of motorised parts and the weight are probably partly how they are offsetting the reduced seating density.

For me a really interesting bit is the 2 centre seats at the front by the bulkhead. If BA did put a 40" TV screen in the centre at the front (as has been suggested) I could see that being incredibly popular - not just for couples but on less full flights where if you were lucky you would not have anyone in the other E/F seat and would have a mini home cinema. I think it would be GOld or GGL city though to land those seats (unless they made them 'Super-Premium' and you needed to pay £100 extra, irrespective of status).

I think that we shall see but I think this is the new J. I was certain that BA would want to do its own thing - distinct and separate from other carriers etc.

My only question is how this fits into the various decks of the A380? Maybe someone can do the maths and work out if its 5 across main deck and 4 upper or 4 across main deck and 3 upper........

The patent application includes seating layouts for not only the A350 but also the A380, B787, B777 and B747. That's exciting if this new product is to be rolled out (widebody) fleet-wide.

Great to have direct aisle access at last, and nice to have some space for people to sit next to each other.

It looks like there is no way to partially recline with your feet up - it seems to be a seat or a bed.

Look forward to seeing a physical version, but the pictures look like you can't get the maximum length of the bed without twisting your body somewhat... hopefully this is not needed!

Given the (lack of) speed with which NF was deployed, it would be unlike BA to rush to retro-fit a new CW seat in existing aircraft.

Yes indeed. I posted it here because it seems like the A350 will probably be the first to be fitted with any new style seating I'd imagine? The 789 is already decided on right?

I would think that there is virtually no chance these seats (if they are indeed the New New NG CW) will ever make it on to 747s. A350, B789 yes, retrofitted to A380, 773s and 788s almost certainly, 772s, doubt it, and 747s no chance.

hmm... i does look quite interesting and if BA is able to provide a comfortable (!) seat without any motors that would be a huge benefit for the company. that said, i'm not sure how good a seat without recline and without a "Z-like" position would work on a 12 hours flight.

Agree and not a fan of either. I much prefer the design of the current CX J as sleeping facing out towards the aisle is less than desirable IMHO

Certainly looks interesting and innovative - but I too am confused as to whether or not the seat has any ability to recline, and how exactly the backrest would look like in real life (as opposed to patent schematics). Sitting straight up for 12 hours solid doesn't sound very nice, regardless of the ability to spread out like on a couch.

"Club Couch" sounds more like it :D
