So, who was running late for BA8734

Really, the selfishness is staggering!

London City Airport had to be evacuated on Tuesday when a passenger who was running late for a flight to Frankfurt triggered the fire alarm after being blocked from boarding his plane.

The passenger is understood to have smashed the alarm after arriving late for his British Airways flight in a bid to gain access to the plane from another gate.

The terminal had to be evacuated by staff at 2.45pm before people were allowed to re-enter 15 minutes later. Scotland Yard said they were called to the scene and spoke to the passenger in question, but did not make any arrests.

As the LCY tweet said

words fail
Surely the police should have done more than just have a chat to the man?

He caused disruption (and possibly upset) to many people for no reason at all.

I am not sure what the charge would be but surely more should have happened than just a good talking to

I also wonder if BA has taken any action against said passenger

I am assuming the man tried to open the door to the gate by attempting to smash the green break glass unit (emergency door release), but instead hit the red break glass unit (fire alarm call point).

It is interesting that LCY doesn't appear (at least in the gate area) to have a double knock system in place which would mean somebody would investigate before the alarm sounds when only one call point is activated.

A double knock system (or delay for investigation) is common in many public buildings in other industry sectors where accidental or malicious activation may be an issue, or where an evacuation may cause serious operational disruption. Can staffers comment as to whether this is the norm at other UK airports?

They didn't make any arrests? If you tried a stunt like that at a US airport, you'd probably cop a short vacation at Gitmo, at least.

I bet the security queue was great fun once the airport re-opened.

Plonker. Honestly we don't help ourselves sometimes!

UK - "Naughty lad don't do that again."

US - arrest, a media firestorm, charged with a federal offence of some kind, trial, possible jail.

Surely that's a criminal mischief or such. Good chance of no-fly...

I doubt it as:

a. You don't make money from banned people
b. The only way of identifying the passenger in the future is by passport No. and that will change on renewal.

The only to stop them is by having them on a no-fly list.

Which is possibly an option?

What is the BA cut-off point for "stupid"/"careless"?
