Following the excellent POUG thread (Pro-active Online Upgrade (POUG) tracking and discussion 2016 thread) this wikipost is all about fixed price AUP (airport upgrades). AUPs are either offered at check-in at the airport, or (less regularly) in the lounge at the airport upon request. More specifics at the end of this wiki, see below.

How to get a AUP
They are only available on the day of travel from the airport. You cannot ring up for them or arrange it in advance. It is subject to availability of both seats and facilities at the airport concerned.
LHR: If you have lounge access probably the best place to find out in this situation is Galleries Club South lounge, at the customer service desk on the left on entry. (T3 GC equivalent is on the right just past the entrance). It needs a ticket agent, who wear blue name badges, and there is always one on duty there. Sometimes the Flounge / CCR customer service agents are ticketing agents, but that's luck of the draw.
For LGW ask the ticket office at the transit / glass end of zone C. For LCY ask at the customer service desk on the left in the main hall. For most practical purposes, you can't get an AUP once landside in LGW or LCY.
Otherwise you can ask at check-in, they can find out whether it is available and send you to someone else for the ticketing aspects. In T5 you can also check at Zone E since again there is always a ticketing agent on duty there.
For domestic terminals you can also ask at checkin, GLA, EDI and MAN have particular desks for this. For non UK locations, ask at the ticket desk where one exisits, but in many locations there isn't one and you need to ask at the check-in counter. At some locations there is neither a ticket desk nor qualified agents, particularly in Europe, so effectively no AUP is offered at this location. At some locations (YYZ, IAD, JFK) they can be arranged from the lounge.

Airport Upgrade (AUP) cost tracking thread
Was offered upgrade from BKK to LHR for £700 yesterday (30/4/14) from WTP to CW. Already have lounge access so politely refused.

I asked for cash AUP in mid march, both WT+->CW, for LHR-SFO (599 GBP) and LAX-LHR (900 USD).
I am curious, does anybody know if I was just lucky, or does BA typically allow AUP on all longhauls as long as there are empty seats in the concerning cabin? What are your experiences on availability?
Also: first post. Hello world.

I asked for cash AUP in mid march, both WT+->CW, for LHR-SFO (599 GBP) and LAX-LHR (900 USD).

BA is, as far as I understand, usually very happy to make AUP offers unless the flight is already overbooked. Even if the cabin is full they don't mind; either you or someone else can often be bumped up to the next cabin to make room.

[Edit: I forgot to mention, both flights were in March]

Hi guys,
I assume asking for AUP at the airport is not a weird thing (Most people here mention they got it offered).
Next month, I will be flying LHR to EWR (787 yay!) and curious about the upgrade options. My flight is booked in the lowest (discounted) class. Would that make a difference?
Great to see that cash upgrades still exist! every day I am learning something here

Following the advice of others here in the BA forum I have never asked a check-in desk agent; Perhaps others can comment on whether or not a check-in desk agent can also provide the same information.

I usually ask for AUP at the check-in desk. At some airports (NCL comes to mind) the tickets desk directs me to the check-in desk anyway.
At SIN, I usually ask at the tickets desk in the connections area, but the success rate there is low. HKG ticket desks in the connections area before security can process them, or at the gate about an hour before departure (good luck with that).

I've usually asked at the check in desks. anecdotal evidence on my part: The chances are better at the First desks as they tend to be less busy and more keen to help and likely asked about this a lot less (if you are entitled to use them). Tried a few times at the CW desks but only when there was no queue behind me, with mixed success.
Certainly important to clearly indicate you are asking about paid upgrade offers they may have on! (and not trying to blag a free upgrade)
If they do have an offer available and you accept, you sometimes have to go to a ticketing desk to pay (depending on airport)...
At US locations I've also had good luck asking in the lounges.

Great will definitely ask for the paid option, don't worry. I am just wondering if the booking class makes a difference in the kind of offer they can make, or would it be the general upgrade rate they offer from WT to WT+?

There is another paid option at check-in, that's the fare difference upgrade. If you have, for example a G-class economy ticket, it can be an eye-wateringly expensive upgrade to WT+ or J (variously range from AU$900 to AU$12,000 for WT to CW). If you have a YBH economy ticket, the fare difference upgrade might be quite a bit more reasonable. According to a check-in agent in HKG, you can't fare-difference upgrade from WT to F however (max. of 2 classes).
In either case, it all depends on availability, so nothing is guaranteed - more often than not, I get what I (work) pay for.
