Following the excellent POUG thread (Pro-active Online Upgrade (POUG) tracking and discussion 2016 thread) this wikipost is all about fixed price AUP (airport upgrades). AUPs are either offered at check-in at the airport, or (less regularly) in the lounge at the airport upon request. More specifics at the end of this wiki, see below.

How to get a AUP
They are only available on the day of travel from the airport. You cannot ring up for them or arrange it in advance. It is subject to availability of both seats and facilities at the airport concerned.

LHR: If you have lounge access probably the best place to find out in this situation is Galleries Club South lounge, at the customer service desk on the left on entry. (T3 GC equivalent is on the right just past the entrance). It needs a ticket agent, who wear blue name badges, and there is always one on duty there. Sometimes the Flounge / CCR customer service agents are ticketing agents, but that's luck of the draw.

For LGW ask the ticket office at the transit / glass end of zone C. For LCY ask at the customer service desk on the left in the main hall. For most practical purposes, you can't get an AUP once landside in LGW or LCY.

Otherwise you can ask at check-in, they can find out whether it is available and send you to someone else for the ticketing aspects. In T5 you can also check at Zone E since again there is always a ticketing agent on duty there.

For domestic terminals you can also ask at checkin, GLA, EDI and MAN have particular desks for this. For non UK locations, ask at the ticket desk where one exisits, but in many locations there isn't one and you need to ask at the check-in counter. At some locations there is neither a ticket desk nor qualified agents, particularly in Europe, so effectively no AUP is offered at this location. At some locations (YYZ, IAD, JFK) they can be arranged from the lounge.

ORD-LHR. I proactively asked to purchase an upgrade. Pricing seemed to be fixed.
WT->WT+ was 300 USD. I took it, especially when she mentioned WT+ was already full so she wasn't sure if she could sell me an upgrade.
WT->CW was 900 USD. I declined in the hopes that there would be a magic beep anyway.

No magic beep.

Would I be right in thinking that $900 is what I should expect for a YYZ-LHR upgrade from WT+ to CW?

Thank you, is it worth the upgrade?

For an overnight flight I would try to pay the upgrade for CW. Only you can decide whether it is worth it for the extra space and service. If there are two of you there may not be seats together.

An upgrade may not even be offered to CW or WTP.

BA Airport upgrades are generally not great value. If low WTP fares or CW are available when booking you can probably get the same seat confirmed in advance and pay significantly less. As a bonus you'll end up upgraded on all your other legs which means more TP and if it was to CW shorthaul business class seats and treatment. The airport upgrade only includes the individual leg.

Other airlines (eg LX, UA, AC) typically sell TATL last minute upgrades (Economy->Business) for $500-700 depending on the route. On BA it's about double that. So it's hard to justify.

The arguments in favour are a) BA does give you extra miles and TP (for that one leg) whereas most other airlines do not and b) Sometimes the cheaper fares are unavailable when booking so you may actually be able to save money in those cases if you were going to book business class anyways.

If you don't know and you can spare the cash, why not find out?

For me the price is optimal (for BA, not me), in the sense that if I am tired I will take it, but if it were even USD 20 more, I would say no every time.

It should be around the £70-£90 mark, similar to other shorthaul AUP's.

Anyone any experience of AUP: LGW - SKG? Will that be around the £70 - £90 mark?

I was offered an upgrade from CW to F for 9,000 ZAR. It should be noted that the check-in agents had been advised to only offer the upgrade to BAEC Gold and up.

Was CW full? I wonder if it was oversold and they are trying to target those who would otherwise receive a free op-up..
