I was near the Champagne bar yesterday for around 30 minutes and I was surprised 9 out of 10 cats passengers preferred Castelnau.

Whereas I managed to have a bottle of Prelude all to myself with no one else touching it (the one that did choose the Prelude chose the other bottle!)

What was funny was most of these looked at every single bottle and then went back and selected Castelnau (which was in the middle), so there was something making Castelnau more attractive to people than Taittinger. Perhaps they liked the label more, or the fact Castelnau had a vintage (2004 I think it was).

So if I was in LGW and I seen a LPGS I'd try hide it behind the other options so those that don't know what it was end up picking the superb vintage Castelnau instead

Free the label from any less attractive Champagne bottle.
Paste upon bottle of your choice.
Drink favourite champagne undisturbed and almost unlimited.

Only problem with that was my random sampling yesterday have shown that people will make surprising choices, so sticking a Castelnau or even a Monopole label on the bottle might make some people choose it.

I think this is exactly the reason.

I do not really like either champagne, but which one is the "better" of the two, in terms if quality, awards, price, reviews etc?

I remember when Prelude was served in F, although not the year. I think BA must have been quite loss making at the time as it is not really a First champagne. Luckily, things improved with the Bollinger GA and then LPGS.

My F flight next week apparently has Palmer & Co Blanc de Blancs 2007 as one of the champagne choices. The LPGS is the obvious go to but I wondered if anyone had tried the Palmer and if so what the verdict is. cellar tracker reviews are positive 'for a $37 wine'.

Why not give it a go? If you find you prefer the LPGS you can always swap ^

Well, I did try and get some on my last F flight

But was given the Collet instead, as they had not stocked the Palmer.

Hope you get to try it!

Well I tried the Palmer and my conclusion is to stick with the LPGS. The Palmer tasted quite light and 'thin' in comparison with the LPGS and although might have worked well on a hot afternoon with a seafood luch didn't work for me in flight.

I think that is a very fair assessment, it's not a bad wine but LPGS is my preferred option too.

+1

The LPGS isn't my favourite champagne, but particularly at altitude it stands up by itself and with food. The Palmer was not unpleasant, but having tried it after a few drinks I didn't recognise anything memorable about it.
