    Voucher eligible spend
Pretty much everything counts towards the £10,000 (or £20,000) required to earn a 2-4-1 Companion Voucher, including the following which might be unexpected:
    • Foreign transaction fees

    A few things that don't:
    • Annual membership fee
    • Interest payments
    • Transactions under £1 (although you can earn the single Avios )

The online total to the right of the card summary is pretty up to date, and far more useful for tracking spend than what the statements show.

    Insurance
Both standard and Premium Plus cards include insurance benefits for goods and services purchased on the card. Full details here and here respectively. Summary of Premium Plus benefit are shown here, with standard card offering same cover unless alternate figure is shown in parentheses:
    • Purchase protection: £2,500
    • Refund protection: £300 (£200) per item
    • Flight delay / cancellation / overbooking / missed: £200 (£0)
    • Baggage delay (6+ hours): £750 (£0)
    • Baggage delay (48+ hours): £1,000 (£0), additional to 6 hours benefit
    • Accident: £250,000 (£75,000)
    • Hijack (24+ hours): £1,500
    • Hijack (72+ hours): £3,000, additional to the 24h benefit

You just apply for the free BA Amex and this is effectively a downgrade.

Turns out that I'm getting triple points on everything from John Lewis as I'm getting the bonus for first year spend at a supermarket plus it's counting it, for some reason, as travel. Which is a nice result when I've just bought a new TV and sound system through them...
Exactly the same thing is happening to me. I spent £900 at John Lewis and received 2,700 membership rewards points. No idea why but I am not complaining!

If you purchased through the BA eStore you would earn an additional 2 avios/£.

Yes I did that as well (actually through the avios.com e-store). So I earned 1,800 Avios through e-store and 2,700 MR points. Equivalent of 5 Avios/£!

    Morning all,

I applied for the Blue BA Amex card in August and have spent £14,000 so far.

Last week I applied for the Black BA Amex card and was approved.

Last night, BA emailed me to congratulate me on earning a companion voucher...but I have only spent £14,000 of the required £20,000 needed.

On my Amex account, the black card appears and it clearly states I have earned a companion voucher.

Knowing the black card spend is £10,000 to earn the voucher, has the system simply taken my blue spend and decided that I've now earned the voucher?

    I'm a tad confused!

    Thanks all.

Yes your account has been upgraded to a BAPP Amex and your existing year spend on the BA Blue card has been taken in to account. You cannot hold both a standard BA Blue and BAPP Amex.

    Ah, interesting.

    Thanks for answering!

Shame I can't hold both - I'd just learnt my card number off by heart!

So having already earned the 2-4-1, and knowing I can't earn 2 in one year, would it be sensible for me to apply for a different Amex card on addition?

Quite a few posts have mentioned the Gold rewards card...

Yes, makes total sense. Put your BA card in a drawer until your anniversary date comes round.

Gold is 20,000 Avios for no fee.

    Jolly good, will do.

By the way Raffles, I found an old-post of yours about an hour ago which answered my questions and also mention the Gold card concept, so a belated thanks!

You can get an extra 2000 points on the gold card bonus (22,000 instead of 20,000) if you sign up via a referral link. I can refer you if you like? (I get some points too)

    PRG card

is there a definitive list of shops where you get the bonus extra points, for this card,

It says supermarkets, and I know M&S stores do, but have just noticed I got extra points on a holiday inn restaurant spend.

I will be hosting (and paying for) a family reunion lunch at Fortnum and Mason on Saturday and was wondering if anyone knows whether they also give extra points?

    Cheers

This thread is for the BA Amex, of which there are no bonus points except when they run a promotion - I do not think there is any promotion currently running.

If you are referring to the Gold Amex there is not definitive list of what shops are included....Amex list it as

Earn two points on your travel spend, from plane fares to rail fares
Earn two points on almost all your spend while abroad
Earn two points for virtually every £1 spent at major petrol stations and supermarkets in your first 12 months

Spend in Holiday Inn would come under travel so you would get extra points. M&S, Tesco, Asda etc all give double points in store and online regardless of what you buy.

Petrol can attract 3 or 4 times points if there is a shop attached. I got 3x on Tesco petrol, and 4x on Shell providing I pay in the store for Shell.

Sorry I do not know what Fortnum and Mason comes under but I would expect it falls a department store and would not attract any bonus.

BA Amex Premier PP Upgrading and Downgrading on regular basis?

Downgraded BA Amex PP back in Sept (Sept renewal) Just hit £10k spend on basic BA AmeX, came across a post that suggested if you upgraded again that the £10k 241 voucher would be generated id this true?

Also presently I am main holder with wife as supplementary, can she apply for BA Amex PP with me as suplementary holder?

I'm thinking that theoretically we could upgrade/down on a regular basis hacing two different accounts so over a year probably equivalent of one £150 fee and potentially generate two 241 vouchers in the year coupled with better avios earning rate.

Does this work and ay potential issues, is considered in the same vein as churning? Also would you need to keep both cards if vouchers earned on both cards or just one?
