[QUOTE=nufnuf77;23866230]Even though the ex-DUB I7SALE is gone, if anybody is interested there is £1471 ex-DUB available to HNL (possibly also OGG/KOA/LIH) during Easter/Summer on ILR28AP bringing 1340TPs at £1.10/TP. ^

I was planning a trip for easter, and this may have just made my plans for me

You can do DUB-LCY-JFK-BOS-JFK-LCY-DUB departing in July (thus catching ILR28AP window) for £1,232 on BA/AA for a much better £/TP ratio.

The key here is to do LHR-[US EAST COAST]-LAX-[US EAST COAST]-LHR which if booked appropriately will generate you 140+210+210+140 (700) TPs thus pushing you past the magic number to 1505. You may want to add on an ex-EU to bring the price down but you'll be adding extra hassle for yourself and you don't need to do that or the LCY-JFK for the TPs.

The key is to ensure you travel domestic F for the US transcon booked on a non-BA flight number so that combined with a BA business class transatlantic it generates you first class TPs.
I think I have a plan but would value some advice. Thinking I'm going to do an overnight hop LAX to Orlando (MCO) on AA on Friday 5th December, then fly back MCO - LAX the morning of the 6th. Only worry is the connection/turnaround time at MCO.

LAX-MCO lands 0530, then return leg MCO-LAX departs 0655. Hoping this will be plenty of time to go through immigration and get back through to reboard? Suppose it may even be the same plane.

Flying first class (P) Round trip will get me 420 TP's and push me into gold by 35 TP's!

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

There's no immigration and no security so you should be fine.

an hour and 25 mins should be fine in MCO. I am not familiar with the airport nor now big AA's activities are though.

out of interest, how much is that? typically, LAX - MIA is much much more expensive than LAX - MIA - XXX (A N Other place e.g. in the caribbean) though I appreciate MCO is a different market.

you may well find (if you have the time) that LAX MCO MIA PTY return is cheaper than LAX MCO return and will obviously give you a few additional TPs a well.

At MCO you will arrive as a domestic passenger and therefore don't need to clear immigration! I'm pretty certain that you'll arrive at the same gate as you will subsequently board from for the return to LAX. I've never flown this route myself so others may know better.

Price is currently $989 US, so approx 600 GB. Quite pricey, but it'll net me 420 TP's and push me into Gold. Wouldn't normally spend that much, but my collection year ends early January and Gold for a year, then the safety net of Silver the year after is quite appealing.

The AA LAX -MCO flight is a 757 as I recall and is probably the worst plane to fly a transcontinental on - poor IFE, uncomfortable seats, noisy and generally old and tattered. I think it is the same plane which returns to LAX so a turnaround is OK. If there are any issues then you either have a long wait to the next flight back or you end up flying to Dallas or Mia.

I flew the 757 from LAX-HNL-LAX and no problems with it. As long as you're not planning on sleeping, you'll be busy eating etc to worry about seeing the same episode of Chicago P.D. (or whatever it's called) for the 15th time Short enough flight anyway.

(Except for the lovely A321/S between MIA and LAX, the entertainment does tend to be the same episode of this, Melissa & Joey and a load of adverts for a network's shows)

I'd read a lot about how bad the AA domestic 757s are but I have flown on both the old brown leather seat version and the refurbished blue seats and slept reasonably well in both on transcon overnights. To be fair though I always liked the old BA cradle seats in Club so I might not be the best test case. I've yet to try the US version.

There are 2 flights a day and the overnight LAX-MCO and direct return is normally on a 738. In my experience it is the same aircraft so I don't foresee any problem turning straight around.

If it was me I'd take the early day flight and be back in LAX the same day albeit that I agree with your views of the 757.

I have flown the AA757 more times than I care to remember and as the operator is taking an overnight from LAX he will be very unlikely to get any sleep at all. The cloth seat version both of us find particularly bad as it is so hard and uncomfortable. There is a big big difference between the 757 and other AA planes and despite what you say the A321 is not the only AA aircraft with very good IFE. The new AA738 with Boeing Sky interiors have excellent IFE with the same selection as the 321 so that's over 200 films on demand plus lots of boxed TV series - Game of Thrones etc etc. Even the AA old 763s have the option of the Samsung tablet with a smaller subset of these on them. So the 757 is the worst plane to fly transcontinental on - clearly AA think it is too as generally the 757 operated flights are the cheapest compared to other planes on the same route.

How quick can you switch between terminals for Honolulu in LAX? Coming in on the BA A380, and have about 3 hours and 20 minutes... Need to check in?

Terminal 4 where the AA flight to HNL departs from is right next door to TBIT where the BA A380 arrives. You should have plenty of time with 3 hours 20 mins as the walk from TBIT to T4 takes about 3/4 mins.
Your bags will be checked through so you pick them up at LAX, clear customs and then just recheck them at the recheck counter just on the right as you exit TBIT customs. T4 is quite small - there is and Admirals Club which you can use Silver or Gold and there is a Flagship lounge which you can use if Gold.

Sadly I'm just in it for the points and the overnight is about $300 cheaper than the early morning same day option. I'm one of the unlucky ones who never sleeps on flights anyway, so thats not too much of an issue and I'll have my ipad for entertainment!
