I really liked that run you suggested from California to NYC.

If I can get a Cathy pacific flight from Vanc to NYC / return then do the run you suggested starting at LGA, would that work?

You mentioned the wiki link at top. I'm using a flyer talk app on an iPad and I don't see that link, sorry.

If I was able to achieve silver status in February would I be able to use the perks right away or do I have to wait a year ?

Thank you so very much for taking the time to help me with this. I really do appreciate it.

Taken from BA.com

For Silver, you need to fly BA at least four times and earn 600 Tier Points or take a total of 50 BA flights.

BA flights are:

flights operated by British Airways, including franchises and BA CityFlyer
codeshare flights on other carriers with a BA flight number
flights operated by Iberia, including franchises, with an IB flight number
Yes, the importance is that the flight number on your itinerary starts with BA.

For IB, the flight number and the operating carrier must be IB.

Sometimes mistakes are made ...

As more experienced members point out, the problem is that you need to do at least 4 flights with BA flight numbers in addition to TPs to get status. And it does not look like it is possible without going across the pond, unfortunately.

One idea is to do SEA-JFK-SEA on AA First for 420 TPs combined with JFK to somewhere in Europe (via LON) on BA in Premium Economy, looks like that will be sufficient to hit 600 TP mark.

Surviving my first one this week (so far).
Flew overnight from JFK-SJU on JetBlue, then AA from SJU-MIA and just done MIA-LAX. Think I've been up for close to 2 days now!
Great crews on the AA flights and the A321/S is very nice with its dark grey seats (although they seem to slope forward - more noticeable during landing as I'm sure the plane is nose heavy or something). Nice 15"? screens (either too sensitive or not sensitive enough and a lot of features aren't there yet) put BA to shame.
(Not the A321/T which is the F, J, Y transcon)

Had the usual luke warm to hotter rags; warm to hot nuts in ramekins; starter, salad, main and dessert; fruit basket and snack baskets offered on LAX flight etc.
Not pro-active with headphones - had to ask for some on the LAX flight (miss my lost Bose ones)

Enjoyed a shower in the flagship lounge Far quieter than BA's although water still not hot enough. Could do with razors, toothbrushes etc like CX (and QF?) do.

Anyway, just the 757 LAX-HNL flight in a couple of hours and then some relaxation time before heading back again....
Should take me up to 1100TP after that.

Ok I'm planning on a trip to LHR in July, but had hoped to be silver before then.

What is the best routing for TPs going from London UK to YVR in Canada.
Mr. Par is coming over to YVR the end of Jan. 2015 and returning to UK beginning of March. I've found an economy fare of £664 direct between LHR and YVR for him on BA0084 / 0085

But in order for him to get the most points for best price is there another routing or sale on around the end of January? All suggestions most appreciated.

He will also be flying back to YVR the end of June and we will be flying together to LHR in July.

Unfortunately, Mr Par will still not have his silver status by that final trip in July back to the UK

We seriously are anxious about the silver status if possible before leaving YVR in July.

Hoping some of you fantastic travellers can help us two oldies out with what we can do. Many thanks

It is a drawback for those living in the US seeking to qualify.

It seems to be the same in reverse for AA/US codes on BA/OW flights outside the US.

Interesting.

I spent a long time looking for something like that but never thought to look there.

BA actually has quite a few Fifth Freedom flights in that part of the world.

The recently added flight from LAX-YVR provides a good TP earning opportunity, depending on how much you are willing to spend.

Right now, for example, you could fly DUB-LCY-JFK-LAX-YVR in I/F for around £1,300 and 860 TPs for the return trip, which is an absolute bargain on a route that used to give a maximum of 360 points for a return, ex-EU trip south of £6,000.

Alternatively, for just an extra £6,700, you could add in an extra hop to LAS, giving you DUB-LCY-JFK-LAS-LAX-YVR for 1,120 TPs in I/F

For IB, the flight number and the operating carrier must be IB.

Just to make this clear, what you need is one of these combinations:-
  • BA flight number on your ticket, flight operated by BA
  • BA flight number on your ticket, flight operated by someone else
  • Someone else's flight number on your ticket, flight operated by BA
  • IB flight number on your ticket, flight operated by IB

Yes that looks quite good, and the AA 777-300ER is supposed to be very comfortable. The only suggestion I would make would be on your outbound have a go on teh babybus A318 service from LCY to JFK, it is incredibly good and you will pre-clear US customs and immigration when you stop at SNN on BA1. There is also an early morning DUB-LCY service arriving around 0830 at LCY which will mean you can connect on to BA1 (usually departs at 0945 but I think it is 1230 on Fridays). You also get 210 TPs on BA1-4. You can try the AA 777-300ER om the way back. Anyway, just a suggestion.
Thanks for the warm welcome! I initially tried an LCY route but for some reason it was pricing a lot more expensive, despite being part of the sale. I will keep playing around. Have been on teh AA 777-300ER multiple times now. It's so good that I never fly BA between LHR and JFK anymore, always stick to AA! The babybus might be nice to try though if i can get it routed correctly.

I think the most economical way for you is to do a 4-leg RT YVR-LON in economy on BA flight numbers, to meet the 4-flight requirement. Cheapest, but not very practical (overnights both ways) option in Feb (all prices in USD):

Vancouver (YVR) to London (LHR) - Thu, Feb 5
Vancouver (YVR) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) - Thu, Feb 5
British Airways p.l.c. 6502 Dep: 1:22PM Arr: 7:15PM 3h 53m Boeing 737 Economy (O)
OPERATED BY AMERICAN AIRLINES INC. Layover in DFW 22h 40m

Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to Madrid (MAD) - Fri, Feb 6
British Airways p.l.c. 1512 Dep: 5:55PM Arr: 10:20AM 9h 25m Boeing 767 Economy (O)
OPERATED BY AMERICAN AIRLINES INC. Layover in MAD Sat, Feb 7 6h 15m

Madrid (MAD) to London (LHR) - Sat, Feb 7
British Airways p.l.c. 7056 Dep: 4:35PM Arr: 6:00PM 2h 25m Airbus A321 Economy (O)
OPERATED BY IBERIA LINEAS AEREAS DE ESPANA S.A.

London (LHR) to Vancouver (YVR) - Sun, Feb 8
 British Airways p.l.c. 85 Dep: 5:15PM Arr: 6:50PM 9h 35m Boeing 747 Economy (O)

Cost per passenger (including taxes & fees) $781.00
Total cost for 1 passenger $781.00

You'll get only 90 TPs for that, but once you are back to NA, there are plenty of options in US to get the remaining ones for Silver for about another $1000 or so.

For ex-EU flights there is currently a business class sale from DUB to US destinations. For example:

Dublin (DUB) to Seattle (SEA) - Fri, Jan 9
Dublin (DUB) to London (LCY) - Fri, Jan 9
British Airways p.l.c. 4463 Dep: 8:45AM Arr: 10:00AM 1h 15m Embraer RJ-190 Business (J)
OPERATED BY BA CITYFLYER LIMITED Layover in LCY 6h 0m

London (LCY) to Shannon (SNN) - Fri, Jan 9
British Airways p.l.c. 3 Dep: 4:00PM Arr: 5:15PM 1h 15m Airbus A318 Business (I)
OPERATED BY BRITISH AIRWAYS BA LIMITED Stop in SNN 0h 45m

Shannon (SNN) to New York (JFK) - Fri, Jan 9
British Airways p.l.c. 3 Dep: 6:00PM Arr: 8:30PM 7h 30m Airbus A318 Business (I)
OPERATED BY BRITISH AIRWAYS BA LIMITED Layover in JFK 22h 5m

New York (JFK) to Seattle (SEA) - Sat, Jan 10
American Airlines Inc. 235 Dep: 6:35PM Arr: 9:59PM 6h 24m Boeing 737 First (A)

Seattle (SEA) to Dublin (DUB) - Wed, Mar 11
Seattle (SEA) to New York (JFK) - Wed, Mar 11
American Airlines Inc. 236 Dep: 7:00AM Arr: 3:30PM 5h 30m Boeing 737 First (A)
Layover in JFK 7h 25m

New York (JFK) to London (LCY) - Wed, Mar 11
British Airways p.l.c. 4 Dep: 10:55PM Arr: 10:05AM 7h 10m Airbus A318 Business (I)
OPERATED BY BRITISH AIRWAYS BA LIMITED Layover in LCY Thu, Mar 12 4h 20m

London (LCY) to Dublin (DUB) - Thu, Mar 12
British Airways p.l.c. 4464 Dep: 2:25PM Arr: 3:40PM 1h 15m Embraer RJ-170 Business (J)
OPERATED BY BA CITYFLYER LIMITED
Cost per passenger (including taxes & fees) $1,882.70
Total cost for 1 passenger $1,882.70

Travel in Jan on this fare in January must start before Jan 10th and tickets must be purchased before Nov 12th. This will give him Silver with TPs to spare.

None of these options are super-convenient, there will be additional expenses for positioning flights, overnights, travel SEA-YVR, etc.

Just to add to this, my daughter took four flights last year on a trip to Seattle, going CDG-JFK-SEA-JFK-CDG. These were all operated by AA, but three of them had an IB flight number. The fourth flight was also operated by AA, but with an AA flight number. The three IB coded flights counted towards her Silver status.

There is currently an ex-DUB sale (ends Nov 12th) for business class trips to US, with max TPs awarded if TATL is booked via LCY-JFK-LCY. Flipping through the last few pages of this thread should provide plenty of examples, including matrix routing codes, allowed travel dates and advice on how to book. Wiki at the top of this post contains some example routings (may not be up to date w/r allowed dates).
