Upgrading Using Avios (UUA)
Summary guide to bookings which can be upgraded with Avios:

I'm not going to quibble on semantics, honest .

But as BAEC sees a BA-designated cabin as business-class but has to reward* travel in the very same cabin as first when designated as/marketed by AA, that seems to me pretty much inconsistent and irregular (to avoid the A-word).

I'm not convinced that time or tradition is a factor. Once an aberrant convention becomes inconvenient, it gets brought into line. That's what happened to the Gulf Shuttle.

Business-class TATL fed into first-class within the US because AA offered only two-class services, Y and F. The current TP situation is an awkward legacy of that.



* I've no idea who does the rewarding for an AA sector on a BA ticket. Can anyone throw some light ?

CX, AY, and BA all use Amadeus I believe so your PNR is usuable on all three websites. AA operates on Sabre hence if you have some AA and some CX/AY/BA flights you get an AA PNR and a CX/AY/BA PNR. If your booking is wholly AA flight you just get an AA PNR and you don't get any Amadeus PNR so you can't view your booking on the CX/AY/BA websites.

TPs should be fairly easy to calculate anyway. For Avios just use the BA calculator.

May I ask the knowledgeable if there is an easy way to check pricing and availability for intermediate stops on an ex-EU?

Let me explain. I understand the principles. I used them regularly in the past from VIE on business trips to the US and South Africa - and the final leg in those days had generous timing, helping me to start the net l/h. I've become reasonably cute with ITA and aa.com.

If I check a multistop from DUB to LAX via LCY, JFK and PHX using ITA, I get a useful price of £1,182 in J with US domestics in F. However, that results in flying DUB-LCY-JFK-PHX-LAX all in one day arriving in LA close to midnight, or 08:00 BST next day.

Trial and error at aa.com produces an April itinerary with overnight stops in LON, JFK, JFK and LON (and one LAX-PHX-JFK on the same flight number) for £1,432 which may be as good as it gets. I chose LCY-JFK and v.v. after checking when lower prices were available.

My wife's significant birthday and a significant wedding anniversary are coming up, and I'd like to 'grant' her Gold status. That itinerary would do it. But is there that intermediate stop availability site that would help in planning?

I'd also like to get overnight stays in HEL of which we have fond memories, but I'm thinking we're getting close to golden eggs mortality.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean—availability on each leg? The only way to check that is by a subscription to ExpertFlyer, and it will be painstakingly slow (you would do it sector-by-sector). However the availability for an itinerary is usually dominated by a small number of sectors—typically the TATLs (I fares on BA1-4 for example). Finding A class availability on US transcons is (normally) dead easy because of the upgrade culture. And BA shorthaul feed to longhaul always books into the J bucket on premium fares to ensure the feed is not a bottleneck. This is true whether you have a full fare F ticket or a deeply discounted I ticket.

You can use the calendar on ITA search to find the days when the weakest sectors are available, then the multicity tool to create an itinerary with some space (stops under 24 hours always permitted).

Middle Eastern flights on QR also have F and no J, although the prices are not so useful.

The sector is paid for by the marketing carrier, without reference to the stock or the operating carrier.

An easy way to do what I think you want to do is to use the /minconnect flag in ITA, e.g.
DUB :: LCY JFK / alliance oneworld;minconnect 1000
to LAX, will most likely offer you an overnight stay in London and in JFK.

QR have a 2-4-1 sale ending 31.10.14 so you need to be quick if you're interested.

Obviously 2 people need to travel but it brings the ex CAI fares in the wiki down a bit. I haven't searched extensively but CAI-DOH-KUL-PEN with the last leg on MH comes in at around £1,167 for 2 passengers (480 TP's each) which I think makes it £1.21/TP. Travel up to 31.3.15. Other destinations are available.

If you haven't been to Penang I can highly recommend a few days there.

Arrives into LAS at 19.20 on the Saturday and departing at 08.02 on the Monday. so gives one full day, and could probably get away with one night's accommodation in Vegas as will be able to head to the airport early. JFK to LAS is on a 738. Is this a good choice or should I perhaps be looking to fly from JFK into LAX or PHX (or similar) and adding in another connection? Will try to keep the cost down, but want the best journey possible, so what are the recommend aircraft for AA? From reading on here I need something that will book into F to get the full TP.

I also looked at the babybus but not possible on Saturday departures. On the return I is pricing up the same, however, when searching on AA.com it is booking in D rather than I and therefore looking at about $4000. Is there a reason for this?

I endorse this option as I've booked a similar one myself (on babybus though, and staying a bit longer in Vegas) . If you flip through the last few pages of this post, you'll see that this fare (known as I7SALE) has generated quite a bit of a booking spree. So yes, it's a good value .

Actually I decided to go just after Easter given the changes in travel validity. I rang up and did get the £1360.38 plus £5 credit card surcharge . The sales person couldn't quite believe how cheap it was . "Head Office" (aka Mrs London Andy) did agree, on the basis that I went on a VW camper van trip with the family. I did check that the 24 hour cooling off period still applies just in case.....
