One trip last year I had bad turbulence on all 3 sectors and I did feel I had been thoroughly through the wringer by the time I got to Waikiki!
So true.

All too easy to underestimate just how demanding these itineraries can be - turbulence or not.

I would agree - last week I did LHR-BOS on the 17.10 overnight in BOS then 7.00AM flight from BOS to LAX, wait in LAX Flagship lounge for 7 hours for the 17.30 flight to OGG - arrive in OGG at 20.10 Hawaii time pickup rental car and then drive to hotel. Total travelling time from BOS approaching 22 hours and the last 5 hours on the 757 were much much worse than all the other sectors.
By comparision, I did a back to back LAX DCA last week - depart LAX 7.55 arrive DCA 16.00 depart DCA 16.59 arrive LAX 19.44 all on the same 737. It was a breeze compared to flying on the 757. Much better seats, IFE was great, plane was less noisy.

Nothing a few hours in Senor Frogs wouldn't fix

My worst trip involved a trip across the Atlantic on the 318 out of LCY, which was lovely, an overnight in JFK, a transcon to LAX on the 321, which was also lovely and a 3 hour layover in LA before our flight to HNL on the nasty 757. Unfortunately our planned flight went tech, so that three hour layover became a 10 hour layover. Those of you who have been to the Flagship lounge in LAX will know that there really is not a lot to do! We survived the boredom and took off late in the evening, arriving in HNL around 3am. We went for a walk along Waikiki beach to stretch our legs after the flight and decided that it would be fun to go skinny dipping. Great idea until we discovered that it was one of the 'Jelly Fish Sting Caution Dates'. Unfortunately we only discovered that after Danielle had been stung. Doh!

I wonder if there is something on in HNL over that period as they do not normally run a 763 to HNL from LAX. If they continue to offer the 763 to HNL then I would take this plane to HNL in preference to taking a direct 757 to OGG or KOA. The connecting flight on Hawaiian 717 is quite short and frequent.
It's Thanksgiving weekend which could be part of it.

As said, I was pleansatly surprised to see it being changed from 757 to 767 (at the same time as being disappointed with then MIA LAX swap from 763 to 738 so overall, it felt like a 'net zero' position).

Was particularly keen on being on the 763 (over and above the reason of it being of course more comfortable) as doing the trip with someone who's not done TP run before and we tried to make it as fun / 'exciting' as possible with regards to flights and planes (thus now AA 738, 763, US 757, 321 plus BA 744, 318, 320 and E190).

There is a cure I was told about in KOA for Jelly Fish stings. At that time in the morning, probably wouldn't have been a Problem to administer.

For exCPH you will need to come across from CPH the day before and pick up BA1 in the morning after a night at home.
Given I live about 30 minutes door-to-door to LCY or about 90 minutes to LHR, I tend to do my ex-EU flights by flying over and back one evening after work, sleeping in my own bed that night, and then doing the TATL section the next day. It means one less day off work, and I can drop the children off to school! I looked at CPH (when ITA is working - like you say!) and the lowest price was Ł2,500 leaving CPH on 1 July .

The date I'd priced up was the BA1 on 2 July so, subject to negotiations with MrsLA, I may see you there!

On the other hand, PHX is a vastly better place to transfer between flights. LAX has been digging up its runway and apron of T4 since I was a child (or so it seems) and the LAX gate handling - never its strong point - can be tiresome. Also AA's crews have a seniority system with knobs on it for HNL, whereas US crews don't have such an embedded set of crews, so you do get some that are not entirely cynical about life.

In other words for a one-off a strong recommendation for AA, on the proviso that it's not a First experience (I'd much rather go Club Europe, if the winds run against you it's 6 hours to get to HNL). If fate puts you on US, then so long as you understand the limitations on food, service, power, IFE, then it's still a valid option since the seat is no worse than AA's 757 and can be an improvement in some respects.

I'd also point out that if you're doing a Trans Atlantic, a Trans Continental and a part Trans Pacific in one day you need to be quite a good flyer to cope with it all! I have had practice on this over the years, but it's still quite knackering. One trip last year I had bad turbulence on all 3 sectors and I did feel I had been thoroughly through the wringer by the time I got to Waikiki!
I did the trip to HNL with my dad last year on AA (plug for trip report here!) but going BRU - LHR - BOS - LAX - HNL - LAX - IAD - LHR - BRU we only spent one night on a plane, and that was flying F from IAD to LHR - stopping off for a day in each city en-route did make the whole thing a bit more civilised, and this time I'd probably do the same, with the exception of the HNL - PHX being an overnighter on the plane

Usually the 763s run the DFW to HNL service and I think I've had a Maui in a 763 too. In the past there was always at least one HNL which was a 763, but it now appears to be the quieter periods when they take one other rotation off, or busy periods when they need the capacity of a wide body. Also they use the DFW-HNL-LAX-HNL-DFW rotation occasionally.

757s are a pig to fly in, and actually I now really dislike the leather beige version, it's not good on the back and the seat width is too wide to be useful, and I'm quite tubby. So give me the cloth version any day, but never the bulkhead seat if wanting to sleep, both types are too cramped. US airways actually have a more comfortable seat, in my view, but typically no power (I need to work on my PC on that sector), and the food/serviice isn't good. But the 763s, even being the old version, is definitely a welcome relief when I see it on the schedule. However don't count your chickens.....
AA does not have "uncoverted" 763. All the 763 have the angled lie-flats up front. They used to run them on mid-cons (LAX-DFW) and lesser transcons (SAN-JFK) and I have never seen one without angle lie-flats.

IIRC AA have begun refitting their B767 aircraft with the new seats.

I was possibly being unclear. "Not yet renovated into New Business Class" would be closer to the mark since the HNL services are currently in the older domestic First version.

now dont let my bias put you off,
I had 2 very nice flights on US once PHL-CLT and CLT-ATL with a 35 min connection and all went well.

This is a cautionary tale of what can go wrong with US airways and longer itiniaries..............
  • There was some delay in the BA flight BRU-LHR so US in BRU decided to rebook me direct BRU-PHL-PHX-ANC , protests and "just get me to LHR and I will sort it" fell on deaf ears
  • Then the BRU-PHL was delayed too resulting in crossing the Atlantic in a 757 with no food, when I should have been tucked up on a BA 787
  • when I got to PHL my itiniary had not been rebooked "go to the hotel and come back in 8 hours" fair enough at least it was a Sheraton
  • Back in 8 hours to find I was booked on the next day flight PHL-PHX and PHX-ANC - looking good, just 16 hours to wait in the airport
  • It wasnt until the orange flashing dust and the plane bucking about 4 hours in that I realised the pilot had flown through a haboob- divert to TUS
  • After sharing a hotel room with a stranger and getting back to TUS we took the 25 min flight to PHX for some reason I was rebooked in coach
  • PHX-ANC one of the most uncomfortable flights of my entire life but managed to arrive exactly 48 hours late
  • To top it all US got some coding wrong and my claim for 140 missing TP was denied twice and then lost in the bowels of the system

I travel creative routings all the time, always allow enough connection time and know "stuff happens" but this was a truly exceptional experience

Er, yes, that's certainly a very interesting outcome. In one trip you seem to have completely and comprehensively outclassed all my bad travel experiences. Did we get a trip report? I'm almost too scared to look.

I did blog it, everyone on here is interested in Hawaii as a final point so I didnt think anyone would be interested in ANC

Start here and read in the "newer posts" direction

I've had a quick read - you're not selling the US Airways experience

Does it get any easier looking back on it now, or are you traumatised for life?! The haboob (never heard of one of those before - never want to experience one!) photos look pretty scary!

This is a nice TP run on paper, though I'm struggling to justify 8+ hours on a 757 for 140TP.

Were you able to actually book this anywhere? I can't seem to price it up on aa.com.
