Agreed - £/TP is important within regions, but it's not as useful if it's the first thing it's sorted by. There's even an argument to be made that it should be sorted by region then total tier points. If you need, say, 600TP and you're in London, you'd probably first look for flights from Europe, then runs 600TP and up, then look to find the best £/TP ratio.

I generally look where the runs are and then plan around them.

Sometimes I might in in New York and it's no problem getting a flight down to SJU to start a run to HNL for example.

HNL-LAX-MIA-BZE-MIA-LAX-HNL A/A/I//I/A/A £901 920TP AA.com
uhhh. those look nice. any date range that they work? I have decided to change my TP tactic for the next 12 months but I am already thinking June 2015 (and I might get weak along the lines with the right offer).

Pivot table anyone?

I just checked my JFK-LHR booking (this was in WE, I collect my TP on cheaper airlines) and I was offer to upgrade one way on this leg to WE+, meaning 90 vs. 35 TP. Last week, when I checked the upgrade would have cost around 360 GPB, but they dropped it today to 166 GPB. I'm pleased that I decided to look at the booking again, or I never would have had the opportunity to buy the extra 55 TP and have a reasonable flight experience for only 3GPB per TP. I am wondering if this is a standard policy when offering upgraded seats closer to flight time? Or is it a result of a significantly undersold class or flight?

EDIflyer,

Do you mind sharing how that routing priced up? I am looking for something similar for next year, slightly different route though.

TIA

Not completely sure if posting here or a new thread would be better...

I've decided I'd like to go back up to gold and maintain it - no other reason than I quite like the idea of a few days a year when I get peace on a plane!

So I'm currently blue, have a couple of flights booked for later this year:
LHR-LAX-SFO
SFO-LAX-LHR
(CW for the route, booked in I-class)

So I think that'll net me 360 points, dropping me squarely in bronze. I think the most realistic place then is a 600 pointer trip... so I'll scour here!

My membership year ends 8th of December so I won't get back to gold this year, but hopefully early next.

I'm hoping that I can go bronze-gold for less than 2k. What's everyone else's thoughts?
(I know the waste of time/ money arguments already!)

yes, these are regular occurances.

£360 would have been a "normal" fare difference between WT and WTP.

£166 (or 169 / 189 - in that region) is a POUG (pro-active online upgrade offer) which offers you (limited time, limited availability - no easy way of predicting whether you might still be offered it an hour / day / week later) same upgrade at a discount.

POUGs are sometimes offered just after booking (they have recently introduced a 48 hour break where it's not offered (to avoid people booking Y and cancelling if no POUG is offered)), I personally find are often offered in the period leading up to the flight (last week or so) and sometimes at OLCI.

lots of discussion and info on POUGs if you want to find more.

If you can do a run in the US (SFO and LAX are good starting points - good 'destinations' are usually Carribbean et al destinations), you should aim for a 1TP / £1. It might end up being higher on average / blended but there are also some great ones at 80p or so.

So, if you need 1,140 and can do run from SFO / LAX, that sounds like 2 x 600 TP earning runs to me which you should get for that £1,200 / £1,300 mark.

If you need to convince yourself (dangerous I know), tally up Avios earned, assume value of 1p per TP (though higher can relatively easily achieved) (KIV value is subjective and this isn't real value) and deduct.

You'll problaby earn 20k - 35k avios for 2 such 600-er runs so your "cost" "drops" from say £1,200 to say £900.

Dangerous rationalisation using false economics, I know, but it tricks my mind into thinking it's sensible.

Many thanks for the tips!
I can't link in any runs on the planned trips (family with me), I'm also not worried about the Avios collection, I'm currently sitting on 400k and 2x241 vouchers - It's really sad that I simply miss my gold and the new job has virtually no travel.

I think I'll target silver this year, then gold meaning I'll only need around 30k TPs for the lifetime gold.. Not sure if the family will let me squander to that level but I suspect if I could land them around 0.75/ TP it'd be acceptable!

re Avios, was just throwing it in to help with any internal convincing. I am actually increasingly using RFS and 'saving' more than £90 so can definitely get more than 1p per Avios value.

that's the spirit re LTG! ^ easy does it but clear goal in mind. I am sort of doing the same with my 'goal'....

Ex-TLV premium cabin sale prices are making for some attractive TP runs just now (especially coupled with the Avios bonus offer).

I just grabbed TLV-LHR//LCY-JFK-LAX and back for $2,831 (c.£1,700), yielding 980 TPs and 60,000 bonus Avios.

There's also TLV-LHR-WAS/NYC and other US destinations in WT+ for about $1,340 (c.£800), yielding 360 TPs and 30,000 bonus Avios.

Now I am going to need between 325 and 505 more TPs to hit a first year threshold for GGL - any suggestions for a cheap and quick run while I am in the USA? My east-west main flight is already incorporated in the above but I have to hit WAS, DFW, YYZ, ORD, BOS and SFO for work purposes...

Chris1979. Just curious about your TP runs (saw your huge one last year), does your travel schedule warrant making these runs? i.e. lots of short haul T5 trips in Y so the CCR becomes a weekly office or something?

Or is it more of a 'love of the game' thing for you?

I'm not knocking it, or trying to be overly personal, just genuinely curious about your motives as I see you on this thread quite a lot eyeing up itineraries!

Are work paying? If so then just fly LAX-IAD(assumoing that's what you meant by WAS)-YYZ-DFW-ORD-BOS-SFO and you'll have more than enough TPs for what you need.

I love the game. And I want it. And I want it now. And I was joking that it might fill the inner void (though the therapists always doubted that). CCR didnt fill it. So I am telling myself that if I get GGLCCRfL, I will be happy. Given that's a few years off, the disappointing realisation that it's has not filled the void is not around the corner and I can live in hope. A bit like I bought a lottery ticket earlier in the year and only checked it 5.5 months afterwards. It was a nice feeling to think that I could have a winning ticket in the drawer and had the win that would allow me to change careers / do other things. Rather than buying a new ticket every week, I just lived in hope.

On a slightly more serious note, work doesnt warrant it, nor does personal travel. I dont think I travel a lot at all though I've probalby done just shy of 100 sectors this year (including some of the crazy ones). I guess on average, I have 2 trips a month (flights - I travel every week with work at the moment but sadly it's on trains at the moment (though that helps hotel status)) or so. That doesnt warrant CCR etc etc and yes, I've done the calculations myself of how much I could spend in Gordon Ramsay each time I went through T5 instead of having gone for the runs.

But I enjoy flying. I enjoy trying different planes, seats, products etc. I buy Airliners World and read it back-to-back. So whilst flying is a chore for my friends and they do everything to minimise time on a plane, I do enjoy it. And I enjoy GGL benefits, premium travel at very relatively low cost, Avios availability etc. And I guess there are more expensive / dangerous hobbies and my views is, "why not". And it's not always 'same plane turnaround' so I do get to see places and am blessed to have friends across the world that I can visit / stay with / use as an excuse to head to their part of the world. It helps that my parents and family live in a different country from me so air travel will always feature as part of my live.

Work got me to Silver in 2004 and I've been Gold since shortly after (can't remember year but I was definitely Gold by 2007 when I moved to the US). I used to do more work travel (long-haul Westcoast to London and Asia ~6 times a year and lots of US domestic travel) whilst work travel now is EDI and BRU on a regular basis and the odd other trip. Personal travel is anywhere from regularly Germany (4-6 times a year), to City breaks to holidays in OZ, NZ, and lots of US trips (I do like shopping in NY). I dont think I would want to drop below Gold and just by chance (well, a few deals I jumped at (IB PAR & AA @ 80p)) and timing (friends wedding happening in the BAEC membership year I didnt expect it to happen) found myself quite close to 5,000 and went for it. I now have the dilemna of maintaining CCR (which raises both money but also 'holdiay' questions) or - current thinking - save any additional runs for very early of my next year (possibly even before expiry of the CCR card (I only attainged CCR 6 days before membership year-end so it was just 12 months) and thus get 18+months and give me some breathing space regarding holidays and planning for next year. Havintg said that, really really really tempted to do a same-day LGA-LGB-LGA next time I am in NY for the weekend.

Having said that, I want to be a bit more exciting and try something outside of the usual AA / US runs. So far, I have got HNL with a friend (who's never done a TP run (nor a few of the planes we are flying on) before which we are both very excited about) and SYD ex OSL in F. that plus a few other 'normal' trips gets me to ~2,500 in this BAEC year.

The vast vast majority of all my travel is personal.

Bit of a long reply but you asked for it - that's my BAEC life story so far as it currently stands.
