Upgrading Using Avios (UUA)
Summary guide to bookings which can be upgraded with Avios:
  • BA issued tickets (can include other carriers) ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with only BA flights ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with other carriers
  • Tickets issued on non-BA stock
TA has to issue the ticket in the country of your BAEC membership as well.

Notes
  • The ITA Matrix tool cannot be used to book tickets.
  • Some TP runs can be booked online at aa.com. Be sure to use the Sort by schedule option in order to locate the exact flights you found on the ITA Matrix tool.
  • A guide to using the ITA Matrix tool can be found here.

I think you can only upgrade the BA segments if they are booked through BA

Have a look towards the bottom of the wiki, it sets out where you can do a UuA and where you can't. In your example you can't. The booking needs to be on a ba ticket and not done through a TA as you have non-ba sectors.

Hello all,

I'm tempted on a tier point run, to get GGL in one year, so I can take my family of 4 somewhere fantastic in 2016, and just wanted to make sure that my assumptions are correct.

My membership year starts in April, and I've just requal'd to Gold again, will be at 2K points after getting home at the end of this week. I have Gold until end of June 2016.

Next trip in a couple of weeks will get me another 400.

I expect to be around 3K points in September.

I've got a couple of potential J class bookings to LAX coming in Sept/Oct/Nov. I could extend one or more of these to do a TP run to get to 5K points. Alternatively, I believe that it's reasonable to assume there will be a sale starting in August, so I could book for Sept/Oct/Noc the well used AMS-HEL-HNL TP run. I'll need 2K points to make sure of GGL at that time, so I don't have to worry about counting on the potential LAX trips. I also assume that I should be able to get a trip booked for £1.5K-2.0K to get the 2k points I need if booked in a sale?

I'm getting my head around ITA Matrix for when the time is right for booking, but not always getting the results that I want or expect, or any results at all!

Questions:
A) If I get to 5K points before the end of this membership year, I get GGL+CCR until June 2016?

B) I also get 2 Jokers when I get to 5K, and again when my membership renews? So a total of 4 to use before the expiry of my membership year? Do my first 2 jokers expire in April 2015?

C) I've just got the BAPP Amex, so expect to get 2 companion vouchers by the middle of next year.

D) I will obtain the various GUF2 and GUF1s along the way

E) Can all of the above be combined to get a trip to OZ in UK summertime 2016 (booked in late summer 2015) if I book after I've got my second companion voucher spending Avios in Club, using the jokers, and also using the GUF2 and GUF1s to upgrade 4 PAX into First? My boys will be 18 and 20 by then, so want to have a last great final holiday together. (I've seen it said that combining all these things isn't the best use of them, but I will probably be richer in avios than cash at that time)

F) What tactics have you used to explain to your spouses that tier point runs are a good idea?

Apologies for the long rambling post, and I think I've got things correct, but would appreciate confirmation. I've read the whole thread over the last couple of days, but might have missed things.

Hi All,

Was looking for some help from the experts here - I am travelling from TLV-LAS in October and have some time on the travel at both ends - so thought of taking a long route in order to gather up some more tier points for another upgrade voucher (& maybe a CCR card as it will be close).

My problem is that I am struggling with the ITA site as I do not know where I want to travel through, just where I want to get to.
On the AA site (which I have understood from here is generally better than the BA site as it books me into First on domestic US for more TP) - I can't seem to add legs above the 6 shown.

If anyone can point me in a useful direction or has any suggestions that would be very much appreciated

A) Yes - I would have thought you would have these until end of May 2016 - it's normally to the end of the following month after your membership year ends

B) Yes - you will get 2 jokers when you qualify for GGL and then another 2 jokers when your membership year starts, (assuming you don't reach 6,000 TPs when you can earn another joker). Jokers have expiry of 1 year from them being issued (as far as I am aware), so the first two jokers you earn will be valid for a year from the point they are issued, and the second two jokers will be valid for a year from the start of your membership year

C) Good stuff - I can see where you are going with this...

D) Great - you are thinking in the same way as I do about these things...

E) Yes - you can use all of these things together. So you can use a single joker for a trip to Oz for a family of 4 in F using 2 companion vouchers, and 2 GUF2s (or 1 GUF2 and 2 GUF1s) and pay Avios for 2 people in Business and taxes for 4 people in First

F) Hypnotherapy works well; lying is a close second; justifying dream trips to Oz in F using all the benefits of GGL that TPs offer you comes a close third

I'm planning exactly the same approach as you, and I convinced my wife without too many problems. Convincing her to go HBO to Hawaii for 3 weeks was more of a challenge, but my wife is (perhaps) more compliant than most!

Oh really!

My wife has enjoyed the fact that she hasn't been in a long haul cabin in anything less than Business for the last 6 years, so it should be a pretty easy sell

Thanks Mr B. I really enjoyed your TRs for the various runs you've done. I probably wouldn't think of doing a TP run, but I will only have to do a single one as I have already done a load of work trips, so you lot have inspired me to go for it.

So, when is the sale starting?! lol

Actually, anything going as a TP run in Asia on the weekend of 23/24 August? I saw some BKK-TPE options, but couldn't get them to work?

Next TR starting soon - getting excited now - my first time in F.

I wish I could answer your question re TP runs in Asia - unfortunately not one of my specialities. I am keen to get out there at some stage - make a change from doing TP runs in the US all the time! So I look forward to reading replies from other FTers.

I have a questions I was hoping someone might be able to answer. I'm sorry if its already mentioned some where else, but I haven't been able to find an answer.

I found the following tier run listed by Phil the Flyer GBP1.67/TP | GBP667 | 400TPs | CAI-DOH-BKK-DOH-CAI Qatar Airways

I managed to get a price of around 8500 EGP(700 GBP) via Matrix. However when I want to book the exact same itinerary via Qatar Airways the priced is double the amount! Do I need to go though a travel agent or is it just the Matrix that is not updated?
I've been keeping an eye on those for a while and ended up booking CAI-DOH-KUL-PEN in February for around £880 which I thought was pretty good. It's not a TP run but the TP/£ yield is probably about the same.

I noted a couple of things about the BKK fares during the past few weeks. Firstly, many of the real bargains have been snapped up so on a lot of dates the fares are now much higher. Secondly, be very careful with itineraries because most of them require overnights in DOH in at least 1 direction.

Just a hunch but I think the £700 fares have just become harder to find but are there if you have good flexibility. I don't know your dates but there is definitely still lots of availability in early 2015.

Not a TP run per-say but some decent J fares from QR to SE Asia:
Bangkok From £2065 Business Class
Singapore From £2090 Business Class
Bali From £2435 Business Class

.
Typically the best we have been able to achieve for TATL ex EU is around £1 per TP so I don't think you'll be able to get 2k for £1.5k ex EU (and the most we've been able to build until a TATL has been 1.5k TP ish).

You can relatively easily achieve sub £1/TP on AA in the US but I've not seen that on BA / OW across the pond.

If you have only just got this card, wont you be a little pushed to gain the 2nd 241 by the middle of next year? As in, if your renewal occurs in say June next year, you will need to then go and spend 10k rather quickly to obtain it?

Just to clarify the Joker situation, the first two you get will actually expire at the end of your current membership year (June 2015), assuming you haven't used them, and will be replaced with two new Jokers when your new membership year starts. These will be valid until the end of your new membership year (June 2016). The best thing to do is to use the first two before June 2015 so you get maximum value before the new ones come along, assuming you have something to spend them on

I blew one of mine on a one way flight from Paris to London for myself and my two daughters, as there was no Avios availability and cash flights were about £300 each. Not the best value, but better than letting it expire and it saved me a lot of money.

QR site. I did look at several agent sites and the price was much the same. For some reason open jaws were much more expensive on the QR site but that might have been down to my itineraries having some MH flights.
