Best way to upgrade from WT to WTP/Club

Hi, I booked a standard ticket (i.e. cheapest fare, WT) on BA that is 2 legs. The first leg is a codeshare (american airlines flight) and the 2nd is BA international flight to Heathrow.

I am looking for the best way to upgrade my long BA flight. Due to the type of ticket, I am told I can't use Avios points to upgrade. At the moment, BA.com is offering me an upgrade to WT plus for £180. I was wondering, if I upgrade to WT plus, can I then use my Avios point to upgrade to club?

Are there any other alternatives for me?

If it is helpful to know, I am a gold member.

Thanks everyone and Merry Christmas. Safe travels.

As far as I know the answer is yes if there is availability in the CW cabin. Also it might be more in the taxes.

If its a night time flight it's a no brainier for 180 in my opinion

If the WT to WT+ upgrade is a POUG at £180, it will push the WT+ fare bucket into an ineligible upgrade fare.

You should try doing a dummy booking on your BA flight to LHR to see if there is a CW availability. If there is one, than you should upgrade your WT to WT + (but just make sure you aren't doing a POUG)

How can one know if it is a POUG or not?

Firstly because the price will look low.

Secondly, at the bottom on the MMB screen it will be shown as a "limited time" offer.

Thirdly, in the upgrade screen itself, it will look like this:

Note this shows two sectors. The first one on top has a POUG at £79, the one below does not have a POUG offer at £406.
