I was at a Seattle Mariners baseball game, 42 with a beard, and was refused a beer as I did not have any id, slipped my mind to take any. I had to go back and get my wife who had her passport with her, she had to hand over the money and take the beer, they would not even let me pick it up off the bar, sad to say this is a true story.

It is the staff who are serving the alcohol who are held responsible for ensuring that they follow the appropriate liquor laws.

I always have to show my MA licence when I buy alcohol - they check everyone. In a lot of places they have to enter the licence number into their system to prove that they have verified the age of the purchaser.

They may refuse non US licences because they cannot verify that the licence is genuine. They are taught to check for the security features on US licences - like checking the marks to make sure a bank note is genuine. They may not be able to do this with overseas licences.

this always seems a little odd but last year in Texas I was refused a beer because apparently it's illegal to accept non-US ID.

Or at least that's what they claimed until I insisted on the manager being involved. It turned out that they trained their staff like this because of the number of illegal Mexican IDs they see. The manager just hadn't figured on a couple of Brits turning up.

Mrs LoM was I think then 24 then but depending upon what she wears she can look a little younger so I had no objection to the casino staff asking for her ID. However when she then produced a UK photocard driving licence this was refused with a demand for a passport instead. I hate carrying a passport around and it always goes in the hotel safe as soon as we arrive.

I do find the US bizarre though in terms of ID acceptability, it would be good if consistent standards are applied. Who wants to carry their passport around with them when the consequences of losing it are so high?

On a trip in 2011, our UK driving licence was accepted everywhere (NYC, Dallas, LA, Vegas) except San Diego. They required a passport, even through they acknowledged they were sure we were over 21 and that our UK licence was harder to copy/forge than a US driving licence (which was accepted).

We own a place in SW Florida and I cannot tell you the number of times I've been 'carded'. I'm over forty and have four children. My eldest is 12, so it is biologically impossible for me to be under 21, but the charade persists. Sometimes it gets really irritating, especially when a 17-year-old waitress insists on seeing your ID. I've gotten over it after 20+ years, but it's so petty, especially when there are so many bigger problems to really worry about.

True story, which I may have posted elsewhere on FT when it happened...

Returning from FRA to LHR and going through T1 security, I was stopped because I had 200g of pâté with me from a butcher/delicatessen I always go to. I was told that, because it was over the regulation 100g/ml, I wouldnt be able to take it with me.

Eventually a supervisor was involved and we went through the whole 'you can see it's a food item still freshly labelled' blah blah. I was ushered into a separate room where the negotiation continued. I'm not sure I have ever before or since rolled my eyes quite so much. They were firm in the 'no carry-on but you can check it' story. That was all very well, but (1) I would have looked like a it of a fool checking in 200g of pâté, and (2) my flight was about to leave.

I then asked the guy in charge what the real problem was and if we could find an acceptable solution. The main problem was the size, so I asked if it would be ok if I cut it in two equal parts (the 200g sticker was clearly visible) and put these into separate clear bags.

"Well that would be no problem sir, then it would be within regulation size"

So someone went off to fetch a knife and two clear bags, and we were out of there in five minutes. Pus we had a great story for the dinner party that night!

I find that ludicrous. Great story for dinner though!
