With all the new arrivals there are also some much loved/hated (*delete as applicable) older aircraft heading for scrapping. Until 2015 most of these ended up in Victorville (VCV) in California for storage and ultimately part out for scrap. After I flew to UK last year, my last leg was a domestic leg on a 767. I preferred the 767 over the 737-800's that Qantas flies in its domestic fleet. Actually, it was quite fitting. I was trying to find out the registration of the 767 I flew on least year, I learnt that it was actually an ex British Airways 767 that Qantas bought from them some years ago. It has since been sold or decommissioned by Qantas.
A much underrated and unfortunately unloved aircraft. I must get a SH trip planned on one before they all disappear.

Thanks for this.

One other question: Have you heard anything about a date for NLV, which was originally planned for November 2015?

As per the earlier post from Twitter of the plane at Cranfield

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...herts-29741443

Prof Phil John, from the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing, said the plane would "provide a highly significant resource, unique in European academia, and further enhances our capabilities and industrial scale facilities at the university".

British Airways captain Marc Schavemaker, one of the pilots flying the aircraft to Cranfield, said: "With more modern and efficient aircraft coming into our fleet, it's great that we have the opportunity to donate this retired 737 for research and training purposes."

Anyone know what LEs last revenue flight is set to be? Would be nice to have a mini do on the ever so FT popular old lady. Saying that as LEs past has shown she's normally still standing when the retirement date has past

Cool British Airways Boeing 737 lands at Cranfield University

Interesting little item.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-b...herts-29741443

A Boeing 737 passenger jet has landed at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire where it will used by students as a research and training tool.
The B737-400 airliner has been donated to the university by British Airways following its retirement from service.

That's great for them , all I got a to play about with at college during my apprenticeship was an old de Havilland Vampire, then back to work working on B75's and B73's , didn't make sense

Likewise.

We spent a few days at Milton Keynes International (Cranfield) playing with simulators and doing a bit of airborne stuff (measuring Phugoids and Short Period Oscillations) plus some sitting in the right seat.

I can't remember actual aircraft at my University.....but then again, I didn't go in much.

I hope they comped the landing charge - £1000+

I'm not sure 55 minutes driving time is reasonable for rural Bedfordshire to central London.

I was on G-DOCN tonight back from Bordeaux. The pilot informed it was the last commercial flight for the old bird and she was heading for the scrap heap.

That is sad on a personal note as the last 3 trips I have made to JER on BA, I was onboard DOCN for every sector.

G-GATJ has been delayed slightly so now won't be making the trip from WOE-LGW on the 1st Nov. Not sure of the reason why.

G-BNLE has just embarked on her final commercial flight as BA284 SFO-LHR. She's due to go to Cardiff this afternoon for stand down. As of a few weeks ago, she was supposed to soldier on until the 3rd week of November. Plans change!

G-BNLJ will shortly (likely to be Friday) emerge from the hangar with Prime fitted and will position back to LHR. The vacant hangar will be used to weigh G-BNLU before she heads off to the desert. This is still planned for the 1st Nov.

Regards,
Champ

The longhaul versions I quite like actually. WT+ is nice because it's a 2-2-2 configuraton, and with only 24seats J has an intimate feel. Similar to upper deck, but different. From a storage perspective, I prefer the old CW seats in the 767, as there is a cubby to put glasses when sleeping, there isn't on the newer CW seats in the rest of the fleet. I find that a serious irritant in CW, where do you put glasses when reclined so they don't get lost or crushed? Or the bottle of water? The older seats had a place for each.

From a comfort when sleeping point of view I find the seats just fine, on par with the newer CW cabins.

BA Fleet : New aircraft arrivals and retirements master tracker

Interesting about G-BNLE as I thought that BA were struggling with airframes a bit due to long haul route expansion. The initial retirement schedule has been delayed and most frames are going later than initially envisaged. I guess that G-BNLE going along with G-BNLJ coming back gets the OF fleet size down further so that the planned downgrading of OF being sold as J on some routes can actually happen and OF can disappear from the rest of the fleet. Also I think that we will see OF being taken out of the fleet faster than the current plans seem to show....

Point taken, still nostalgic about the rate of 744 retirement though.
