BA FLEET: NEW AIRCRAFT ARRIVALS AND RETIREMENTS WIKI

BA are in the mid-stages of a large fleet renewal programme. The new aircraft have enabled BA to retire the 767 and old 737 fleets, although the 737 MAX may appear in the fleet in the future, and will eventually allow the retirement of the 747 fleet plus the addition of new routes, both shorthaul and longhaul. BA have not yet announced the replacement aircraft for the majority of their 777-200ERs which are approaching retirement age.

Projected Fleet

This renewal programme, which is being complemented with a cabin refresh for some of the older aircraft, will see the following fleet at year end 2023.

Airbus A320ceo: Ten A320ceos were delivered between June 2013 and Oct 2014, based at LHR. Ten second hand A320ceos were delivered to LGW between Dec 2014 and Aug 2016. Details are archived here.

Airbus A320neo: 35 A320neo family aircraft (25 A320s and 10 A321s) were ordered to replace 21 of the older A319 and A320ceos and add extra capacity. Deliveries started in 2018. In May 2019 three A320neos were converted to A321neo bringing the split to 22 A320s and 13 A321s.

Boeing 777-9: BA announced an order for 18 Boeing 777-9 aircraft plus 24 options which will be powered by General Electric GE9X engines on 28th February 2019. Each aircraft will be fitted with 325 seats in a 4-class, 8F/65J/46W/206Y configuration. The 777-9s on order will be used to replace 14 Boeing 747-400 and four Boeing 777-200ER between 2022 and 2025.

Boeing 787-9: Eighteen 787-9s were delivered between Sep 2015 and Jun 2018 and are based at LHR. Details are archived here.

Retirements

With all the new arrivals there are also some much loved/hated (*delete as applicable) older aircraft heading for the chop. Until 2015 most of these ended up in Victorville (VCV) in California for storage and ultimately part out for scrap. Since 2016 most ex-BA planes have been sent to St Athan (DGX) in Wales for scrapping.

Boeing 747-400: As of June 2019, 24 747-400s have been retired from the original fleet of 57, leaving 33 aircraft in service. Of those remaining 18 are "super high-J" aircraft (14F / 86J / 30W / 145Y), all of which have received a cabin refresh. The remaining 15 aircraft are "mid-J" (14F / 52J / 36W / 235Y), all of which will have received a cabin refresh by the end of 2019. All aircraft are fitted with New First.

The current plan is for all aircraft to be retired by February 2024. BA plans to have the following numbers of 747s in the fleet at year end:-



  • 2019: 32 aircraft
  • 2020: 27 aircraft
  • 2021: 20 aircraft
  • 2022: 13 aircraft
  • 2023: 3 aircraft

Not long enough to be a D check, but long enough that she's obviously not destined for VCV in the immediate future.

Now to see whether LE is withdrawn shortly, now that LF is back and a new 380 is about to be delivered.

Sounds like a C check, these normally take a couple of weeks, possibly a bit longer if faults need sorted. Should be good for another 18 months to a couple of years depending on BA's maintenance schedule.

LE and LF are in different sub fleets, LE being Hi-J NF and LF being mid J OF.

BNLU has gone according to BA Source

British Airways Boeing 747-436 G-BNLU was withdrawn from service at London Heathrow this morning after arriving as BA208 from Miami. The aircraft immediately positioned London Heathrow Cardiff-Wales for component recovery which will include removal of the New First cabin for re-use in another aircraft. This brings the active Boeing 747-400 fleet down to 45 aircraft.

Bizarre, that LU (NF) was supposed to go in Oct 15 and LW (OF) this month - as bad as the LE v LF conundrum.

Moreover, if LF had stayed at Cardiff a few more days or LU had retired a few days earlier, LF could have had LU's NF seats!!!

I think it's looking more likely that LU has gone in LEs place and that the grand old lady will carry on flying for a while longer, not bad for an aircraft that's avoided the scrappers several times over already


At least CIVC should get LUs NF cabin.

Yes, but retirements are coming from all the sub-fleets, and both LE and LF have hitherto been specifically identified as planned retirements. As we've been seeing, the plans are obviously subject to change!

I'm not sure that I'd go as far as "bizarre". We don't have access to important information like the maintenance schedules and what work would be required to keep any particular aircraft flying for the next month, three months, six months etc. It could be that with work having been done earlier in the year on both LE and LF, some work could be saved by retiring LU one year earlier than originally planned. The original plan pre-dated LL's accident, so everything must be subject to change.

As for LF taking LU's NF cabin, they are both mid-J aircraft, so it may well have been that mid-J routes could not have tolerated both LF and LU being out of service at the same time. So could LF's C-check (or whatever) have been deferred until after the NF cabin was removed from LU? And could mid-J routes have coped with LU being withdrawn now, and then LF later being out of service for some time for the re-fit? Possibly not - but we can't know one way or the other.
