BA FLEET: NEW AIRCRAFT ARRIVALS AND RETIREMENTS WIKI

BA are in the mid-stages of a large fleet renewal programme. The new aircraft have enabled BA to retire the 767 and old 737 fleets, although the 737 MAX may appear in the fleet in the future, and will eventually allow the retirement of the 747 fleet plus the addition of new routes, both shorthaul and longhaul. BA have not yet announced the replacement aircraft for the majority of their 777-200ERs which are approaching retirement age.

Projected Fleet

This renewal programme, which is being complemented with a cabin refresh for some of the older aircraft, will see the following fleet at year end 2023.

Airbus A320ceo: Ten A320ceos were delivered between June 2013 and Oct 2014, based at LHR. Ten second hand A320ceos were delivered to LGW between Dec 2014 and Aug 2016. Details are archived here.

Airbus A320neo: 35 A320neo family aircraft (25 A320s and 10 A321s) were ordered to replace 21 of the older A319 and A320ceos and add extra capacity. Deliveries started in 2018. In May 2019 three A320neos were converted to A321neo bringing the split to 22 A320s and 13 A321s.

Boeing 777-9: BA announced an order for 18 Boeing 777-9 aircraft plus 24 options which will be powered by General Electric GE9X engines on 28th February 2019. Each aircraft will be fitted with 325 seats in a 4-class, 8F/65J/46W/206Y configuration. The 777-9s on order will be used to replace 14 Boeing 747-400 and four Boeing 777-200ER between 2022 and 2025.

Retirements

With all the new arrivals there are also some much loved/hated (*delete as applicable) older aircraft heading for the chop. Until 2015 most of these ended up in Victorville (VCV) in California for storage and ultimately part out for scrap. Since 2016 most ex-BA planes have been sent to St Athan (DGX) in Wales for scrapping.

Boeing 747-400: As of June 2019, 24 747-400s have been retired from the original fleet of 57, leaving 33 aircraft in service. Of those remaining 18 are "super high-J" aircraft (14F / 86J / 30W / 145Y), all of which have received a cabin refresh. The remaining 15 aircraft are "mid-J" (14F / 52J / 36W / 235Y), all of which will have received a cabin refresh by the end of 2019. All aircraft are fitted with New First.

The current plan is for all aircraft to be retired by February 2024. BA plans to have the following numbers of 747s in the fleet at year end:-
  • 2019: 32 aircraft
  • 2020: 27 aircraft
  • 2021: 20 aircraft
  • 2022: 13 aircraft
  • 2023: 3 aircraft

Suspect that this will be written off. A substantial wing repair, OF seats etc and there is probably the chance to get something else delivered earlier and offset this loss. This is an old 747-400 so won't worth anything like what I suspect the repair bill would be.......

I would have thought that there are a few new frames coming soon in 2014 so the schedule should be OK.....

What would they do with it if they don't repair it and fly it out though? The only other options seem to be to break it up there or park it somewhere remote, paint over the BA logo and hope the airport authorities forget about it.

G-BNLL has already had a heavy check this year, so BA may be reluctant to scrap her so soon. However, despite a D check costing millions, it will probably still be cheaper to send one of the 744s earmarked for retirement to CWL for a D check and keep it longer, than to fix BNLL. That damage looks pretty bad from the photos.

This is Joburg after all, so all they need to is park it somewhere near the perimeter fence and bit by bit the problem will go away

Every African and South American airport I've been to seems to have an aircraft graveyard in some corner or other, usually a DC-3 or something of a similar vintage. I usually photograph them and try to identify them later (which reminds me; there are two I spotted at IQT in 2009 that I've never got around to identifying). I suppose it's about time those junk yards were updated with a 747 or two.

747-8i

a poster mentioned rumour the A380 fleet reducing possibly to 10 iso 12 and that the 747-8i was a flop

it's not a flop - in sales yes but in-service no - fuel burn is better than expected and it takes more cargo then an A380
pax love it coz its still a jumbo
LH are the only western pax carrier to have it and its doing well with them...

i am so surprised that Boeing did not offer amazing deals to the likes of BA plus VS QF SAA ANZ AF and other old Boeing legacy carriers to roll over their 744's for 747-8i

Except that LH have announced that they will retire the 747-8i from service early already as it does not offer the economics of the newer twin engine frames.....

So, what is happening regarding the so called imminent arrival of the "pre-loved" A320s for LGW? It seems to have gone a bit quiet of late regarding these.

Was just going to post the same link.

I am afraid the 747-8i is a flop since there are hardly any sales. It doesn't matter how technically good it is, and even if it is better than the A380 on some parameters, if you don't sell many then it counts as a flop.

The 8F is a reasonable success and accounts for most of the 747-8 orders, this is partly helped by not having any competition in the very large freighter market since there is no A380F. According to wikipedia there are 119 orders for the 747-8, but over half are for the frieghter. Compare this to the 777 where only around 14% of order are for the freighter.
