BA FLEET: NEW AIRCRAFT ARRIVALS AND RETIREMENTS WIKI

BA are in the mid-stages of a large fleet renewal programme. The new aircraft have enabled BA to retire the 767 and old 737 fleets, although the 737 MAX may appear in the fleet in the future, and will eventually allow the retirement of the 747 fleet plus the addition of new routes, both shorthaul and longhaul. BA have not yet announced the replacement aircraft for the majority of their 777-200ERs which are approaching retirement age.

This renewal programme, which is being complemented with a cabin refresh for some of the older aircraft, will see the following fleet at year end 2023.

New Arrivals

Airbus A320ceo: Ten A320ceos were delivered between June 2013 and Oct 2014, based at LHR. Ten second hand A320ceos were delivered to LGW between Dec 2014 and Aug 2016. Details are archived here.

Airbus A320neo: 35 A320neo family aircraft (25 A320s and 10 A321s) were ordered to replace 21 of the older A319 and A320ceos and add extra capacity. Deliveries started in 2018. In May 2019 three A320neos were converted to A321neo bringing the split to 22 A320s and 13 A321s.

Boeing 777-300ER: Six 777-300ERs were delivered between Sep 2013 and Aug 2014 and are based at LHR. Details are archived here. A further three were ordered in November 2018, and a fourth in December 2018. These final four are due to be delivered from Q3 2020.

Boeing 777-9: BA announced an order for 18 Boeing 777-9 aircraft plus 24 options which will be powered by General Electric GE9X engines on 28th February 2019. Each aircraft will be fitted with 325 seats in a 4-class, 8F/65J/46W/206Y configuration. The 777-9s on order will be used to replace 14 Boeing 747-400 and four Boeing 777-200ER between 2022 and 2025.

Boeing 787-8: Twelve 787-8s were delivered between Jun 2013 and Nov 2018 and are based at LHR. Details are archived here.

Boeing 787-9: Eighteen 787-9s were delivered between Sep 2015 and Jun 2018 and are based at LHR. Details are archived here.

Retirements

With all the new arrivals there are also some much loved/hated (*delete as applicable) older aircraft heading for the chop. Until 2015 most of these ended up in Victorville (VCV) in California for storage and ultimately part out for scrap. Since 2016 most ex-BA planes have been sent to St Athan (DGX) in Wales for scrapping.

Boeing 747-400: As of June 2019, 24 747-400s have been retired from the original fleet of 57, leaving 33 aircraft in service. Of those remaining 18 are "super high-J" aircraft (14F / 86J / 30W / 145Y), all of which have received a cabin refresh. The remaining 15 aircraft are "mid-J" (14F / 52J / 36W / 235Y), all of which will have received a cabin refresh by the end of 2019. All aircraft are fitted with New First.

The current plan is for all aircraft to be retired by February 2024. BA plans to have the following numbers of 747s in the fleet at year end:-



  • 2019: 32 aircraft
  • 2020: 27 aircraft
  • 2021: 20 aircraft
  • 2022: 13 aircraft
  • 2023: 3 aircraft

Actually they can't because IAG has decided to retain the "surplus" A320s at Aer Lingus, and instead remove the 4 A319s from their fleet. Vueling are getting the A319s.

All but one of the ex-bmi A320s are going to be bound for Gatwick for Summer 2016.

In Las Vegas yesterday, travel there once a month from PHX. VIIO was moved to a slightly different position exposing the damaged left side. My take is that repair work has clearly started. All of the damaged portion of the fuselage and lower wing was tightly wrapped in what appeared as a blue plastic or tarp, left engine has been removed for some time. I suspect the damaged metal from those areas has already been removed.

Travelling LHR MIA 09 June back 23 June and had hoped the A380 would make an appearance.

A380 will be back on the route from 01st July, so I assume its will be once G-XLEL gets delivered.

Anyone any experience, it's if likely to be delivered earlier, and if so will BA switch the equipment earlier?

My sons first time Long haul, so we gutted we are missing it.... May see if I can change and travel something like MIA JFK LHR NCL instead

G–LCYV was delivered to MAN this afternoon. Routing RME–KEF–MAN. This is a second hand bird from Republic Airways and is 6.3 years old.

Apparently the next 2 E90’s will be from Republic Airways too.

BA's terminal at JFK cannot accommodate the A380. IAD is the only other US east coast route with the A380.

The E-190s from Republic are a surprise - that seems to have slipped under the radar.
Do we know if Cityflyer will refit them to their standard layout, or keep the 99 seat configuration used by Republic?

Slightly OT, but things are getting interesting at LCY - extra jets for BA and Cityjet have just upped their orders for the SSJ.

Much and all as I'd like them to have larger seats in CE with a 1-2 config I don't see it happening

Also slightly confused about Republic / American having 99 seats with first having a 39" pitch and economy 31", vs. 98 on BA with a 30" pitch... (Presumably seatguru not being accurate? Or do these birds currently have slimmer seating)

And don't forget Swiss getting the CS100 (just certified in Canada in last few days), plus that Odyssey crowd who have 10 of them on order
