BA and Cathay announce codeshare for flights to Australia (eff 31 Mar 2013)
British Airways and Cathay Pacific have agreed to enter into a codeshare agreement for flights to Australia starting from 31 March, 2013.
The arrangement means British Airways customers travelling to and from Australia can connect via Hong Kong to flights operated by Cathay Pacific and bearing BA flight numbers. British Airways currently flies to Hong Kong twice daily, and the codeshare flights via Hong Kong will serve Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Cairns.
They are in addition to BA’s daily direct flights from London Heathrow to Sydney via Singapore.
The arrangement will allow BA to serve all major Australian cities and provide customers with increased schedule options and flexibility. Customers travelling via Hong Kong also have the benefits of arriving at Terminal 5 and our accessing the short-haul network, while providing a single itinerary and through-checked bags.
Tickets for the codeshare flights go on sale today – Monday 25 February.

I obviously think this is great, because CX is a great airline.
They are, interestingly, quite often less expensive than BA. For example, for a random week in May to MEL - a Ł1,400 difference in J booking direct with CX all the way, versus BA/CX codeshare (BA LHR-HKG, CX HKG-MEL).
I therefore wonder if this is good for BA? Some people may just take the view that if I'm travelling half way with CX, may as well travel all the way for less.

This a great news, CX is a fantastic airline!
I hope they can cooperate even more in the future, maybe adding codeshares into European and Asian network.
Furthermore BA is likely to begin A380 flights to HKG...

That's highly unlikely for a number of reasons, not least there isn't the room for 5 CX long-hauls, the codeshare does not apply to LHR-HKG and BA and CX are still competitors on LHR-HKG.
