As a Northerner pies are always appropriate to the time of day

Ah OK - I think I'm getting confused with the spare ribs on the buffet perhaps?

Possibly, the ribs have a hot/spicy sauce on (with no obvious E numbers incidentally, I've seen it made up in the kitchen). The pork belly has no sauce, with a dry glaze to it, slightly crunchy.

I think that's indeed the mystery solved! As c-w-s mentions, the beef ribs have a lot of sauce on them. I take his word there is "no E number" there but I agree with you it does "taste" pleasant but quite artificial. It also certainly does not taste much of chipotle which was originally supposedly supposed to be its main identifying feature and is indeed not very spicy at all (anyone who has eaten a bit of a whole chipotle will realise there can't be much of it in that sauce! ) I haven't seen the ribs for a while but there seems to be a rotation between various 'non-gloopy' hot items on the buffet and while I sort of like the ribs, I'd say the pork belly is quite well managed. I'm not a big fan of pies and think that there are already far too many starchy and saucy items on the buffet so would personally prefer to keep a plain meat/fish options or two.

The buffet ribs look pretty scary to me...far too fatty and a weird colour.

Well, remember that for people who do not have enough time to order from the menu, the other options are unidentified gloop with even weirder phosphorescent colours or salads most of which contain a pot or two of ghastly industrial mayonnaise.

I had the pulled pork sandwich, with dry, stale bread and cold chips last week. The pork was, well, poor.

Glad I mostly pass through at breakfast time.

I had the pulled pork sandwich last Thursday evening and I thought it was pretty good.
As indeed was the white chocolate cheesecake.
