BA American Express credit card | 2013 master thread

  • No annual fee (Supplementary cards free)
  • Welcome bonus: sporadic, see Wiki post above
  • Cardholders earn 1 Avios for every £1 spent
  • Companion voucher earned each year upon reaching a cumulative spend of £20,000. Voucher is valid for one year and can be used for a guest to accompany the cardholder on a redemption ticket. Redemptions can be one way or round trip (open jaws accepted), must be on BA metal and subject to standard redemption rules

Using your companion vouchers

The concept behind the voucher is simple. You the cardholder may book a redemption ticket, paid for in Avios and you take a travelling companion along with you. The usual taxes, fees, and surcharges apply to both passengers unfortunately, which are paid for by the card holder.

Standard conditions:
  • The voucher is valid for travel on BA operated flights with BA prefix only
  • Valid towards return flights only, with the journey originating from and returning to your country of membership (with the exception of vouchers issued in the UK which may also be used for one way travel)
  • Taxes, fees and surcharges do apply to the companion as well as the travelling card holder. The card holder will pay the cash supplement assessed for him/herself and all others in the booking, using the credit card associated with the voucher.
  • Combining two vouchers with a single booking is permitted. This allows the travelling card holder to take three travel companions. A maximum of two vouchers can be used towards any single booking.
  • The cardholder can travel without the companion. However, the companion cannot travel without the cardholder.
  • The cardholder cannot cancel the companion's ticket to get your companion voucher back and still fly. In order to get the voucher back, the whole booking must be cancelled and re-book for yourself, provided there is redemption availability.
  • Cancelling a redemption booking does not guarantee the seat(s) will be released back into the award inventory.
  • If the booking is cancelled before 24 hours of the first flight, the Avios, taxes, and fees will be refunded, plus the companion voucher. Generally the voucher and Avios will be refunded quite quickly, with the monetary components taking a few more days to process. A cancellation fee will apply unless you are a BAEC Gold card holder.
  • The voucher can be used for one way itineraries

Promotions
Amex runs promotions in concert with UK retailers from time to time. Please refer to the Wikipost above for current offers.

A few ground rules
The previous Amex and BA thread had developed into a tremendously active and fast moving thread which presented significant hurdles to those not able to tune in on a daily basis or were offline due to any travel commitments they had. For the greater good, and health of this mutual resource, please only post in this thread if you have a new promotion to share or are seeking assistance or are able to assist with queries raised by others. Posting of daily spending habits while interesting i'm sure also clogs the arteries and is better shared on Facebook or via PM.

Thanks for starting this Prospero,

I'm happy to maintain a list of people willing to offer referrals in this post if that is acceptable.

In order to keep the thread clean, please click here to PM me if you would like to be added to the list.

In order to save me a few clicks (x100s), please use this format:

UserName (count)

Then also paste a link back to this thread in the PM

Thanks!

Whilst it is no real indicator of whether you should choose a particular person to be your referrer or not, I'm also going to put the person's post count at the time of requesting to go on the list after their name so you can at least get some indication of how much they contribute to FT.

Of course, you might prefer to play our little game of "fastest finger first" and post to this thread asking for a referral then see who replies first :D

Alternatively, click here for a randomly generated number.

Worth noting at the top that the sign-up bonus is higher at 10,000 / 26,000 if you are referred.

Also worth noting that if you go via Quidco you get £45/£15 cash back (but this normally takes a few months to pay and it's a choice of either being referred by another cardmember or using the Quidco offer).

Is there an equivalent master thread for all Avios related credit cards, including PRG, Plat, SPG etc?

P.s will delete this post afterwards

There's a Lloyds thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...dit-cards.html

And a Gold card thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...-relaunch.html

There's also a dedicated Amex forum on FT, although it's mostly US focused:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ameri...p-rewards-410/

P.S I don't think there is any need to delete your post, this will serve as a useful pointer to others.

The two Amex ones are very unwieldy due to length. The lloydstsb one is also quite skewed towards the relaunch offer with the launch of Avios.

Is it worth keeping a record of the recent range of bonuses for signup, so people can tell how good the prevailing one is vs. waiting for something better? And how often something better comes around....

EDIflyer Jan 3, 2013 10:54 am

Agree they're quite long, although mainly due to quite useful/relevant discussions at the time (probably less useful when read later) - my recommendation for someone looking for an up-to-date list would be to take a gander at Raffles' "Head for Points" blog - the credit cards page on there is updated monthly.

I usually refer to Raffles' credit card update on HeadForPoints.com to be fair. Would be nice to have an equivalent on FT though :)

Amex currency exchange lhr

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place for this post but i think i am in the correct place:)

About to pull the trigger on £2450 Sterling Travellers Chqs to collect at ACE LHR on both my card and my wife card.

The sole reason is to hit minimum spend on her Amex Plat Card and trigger 2for1 on my BAPP.

When we return from our travels i will (hopefully) cash these in for 0% fee.

Can anyone confirm that these are still showing as purchase and not cash advance therefore avoiding further cash advance fees?

Also, can anyone confirm where i can exchange these upon return for 0%

Thanks in advance

Booking a refundable BA flight might be a more effective solution? Then your only cost is the £15 BA refund fee.

I tried to buy $3000 with my BAPP with no success - the transaction was declined as my card was not set up for cash advance. I know Raffles managed to make this work but have been unable to find the FT post or blog entry with details of the card used, etc.

It definitely works with a CHARGE card (ie Plat, Gold).

There is no proof, I think, that it works with the BAPP which is a credit card.

Thanks Wozza

I had not considered that because i thought that either the bonus MR points would be removed upon cancellation? ...or the 2 for 1 cancelled??
