I find it to be broken quite often, but I hope they are working at the moment given the potential for huge queues.

What is IRIS v2? I thought Iris was at the end-of-life?

In theory the current IRIS machines are supposed to be superceded by another system that should be installed once the current ones are retired.

From what I understand (and have seen) the new machines on the very far left of the passport control hall in LHR T5 are IRIS v2, although they have not yet been switched on as doing so would make far too much sense.

There is no IRIS v2.

There is a passport chip-reading/biometric measurement gate system that is already working in parallel to IRIS, and that is a system whose use will be continued.

Yes, those are the e-passport gates which, in theory, are supposed to eliminate the need for iris altogether.

They definitely would not succeed in that as the e-passport gates are only suitable for EU/EEA chip pass ports whereas Iris was available to anyone with leave to remain in the UK provided they pre registered. Quite complementary systems.
