cabin bag, Gatwick->USA, do I need to stop by check in desk?

I know when I fly from T5 to the US, even if I OLCI I need to call via a check in desk to get my passport checked. Does this apply at Gatwick?

(I have a funny feeling I asked the same Q 2 years ago, but matters may well have changed).

TIA

The lounge dragons usually take our passports away and sort out any issues, never go to check in if hand luggage only. (we have b1/b2 visa's and no esta, always causes an issue)
