Now wash your hands!

Sat in 10J on a BA 777 (as I was on BA154 CAI-LHR yesterday) one has a ringside seat for the comings and goings of the CW toilets.

It struck me during my flight that - at a conservative estimate - 70-80% of the occupants of the toilets flushed then immediately opened the door to exit the toilet.

Come on guys - doesn't anyone bother to wash their hands after using the toilet anymore?!

Couldnt it be they wash their hands THEN flush the bog?

flush after washing hands

I think there are a lot of people who find the vacuum effect in the toilets a little disconcerting as they think they may get sucked out so wash then flush (illogical I know).

I wash my hands and then with a paper towel in my hand I flush the toilet and open the door before dropping the used towel in the bin.

I agree completely with your statistic.

On the airbus, the Club loo is right next to the galley, and at least 80%, predominantly men, don't wash their hands.

Us cabin crew often comment on this. They are in and out in a flash and the wash basin is often still completely dry!!

Trust me!

P.S. you would be amazed at how many don't seem to be able to hit the target, either!!

A friend of mine (who admittedly is a bit of a hygiene/health freak) recommends bringing a small bottle of Dettox spray on board (even in CW) and applying well to the chair arm rests and dinner tables as the turnaround cleaning isn't quite up to scratch - any truth in this? Probably best I don't tell her this story or she will probably never fly again..

I'm surprised there isn't hand sanitiser on flights.

I do the same in all public toilets, if I don't have a paper towel I use my sleeve.

If anyone could possibly be interested in my routine:

Flush
Wash hands
Open the door using a paper towel

I also use a wet wipe to clean the IFE and seat controls.

Edit: And like Can I help you this goes for all public toilets.

Same as BA304, only that I use the hot towel instead of a wet wipe.

Hand sanitiser is usually alcohol-based, and thus flammable. That's why it's not used on aircraft.

Yes, but hand sanitiser is above the magic 50% you need for it to ignite if you hold a match to it.

I always clean my traytabel and IFE with an antibacterial wipe. You'd be amazed how many bacteria there are on that!
IIRC a high percentage was tested positive on e.coli and such
I also bring my own hand sanitizer. (and no, I'm not a hygien freak)
