I seem to recall that the "cross check" instruction is only given in the "to automatic" direction. In the "to manual" direction, as no major direct safety issue is involved then no cross check required.
Am I correct?

As soon as someone from the profession answers we therefore will know whether I have good memory or whether I am getting senile.

The instructions to put the doors to manual is given by the pilots and it shoud include 'cabin crew place the doors to manual and crosscheck'.
It is important for the doors to be disarmed because deploying a slide is a very expensive thing to do, as it takes a long time to repack and replace a slide. It also is dangerous for the ground staff outside the aircraft.
We only open a door in BA if steps or some form of jetty is in place as this is a secondary safeguard as the slide will not inflate unless it drops below the door level, but even so re-packing one would cause a massive delay and cost to BA.

Yes that is what I was meaning, it is starting to get a bit difficult to find some topics now and I think I read that one of the mods stating that really long threads can cause problems.
