SFO to GIG via LHR

I am new to BA and was playing around with the routing at BA.com to see where I can spend my BA miles.

Flying from SFO to LHR and then to Euro Zone 1 was 150K miles in first (RT)plus about $700 in fees.

But then when I routed SFO to GIG with a stopover in LHR on the way back, the system quoted 100K miles plus about $1500 in fees. SFO to LHR in F and LHR to GIG in CW.

Is this right? So if I want to go to Europe in F, I can save 50K miles by adding a quick trip to Rio. There is the additional $800 in fees but it seems worth it for the 50K mile savings plus a trip to Rio.

you are correct! although it doesn't work ex:LAX, IAH, YVR, LAS, MIA, MCO, PHX, SAN, SEA but does from JFK, SFO, ORD, YYZ, TPA, DFW, IAD, PHL, BOS

It only works for GIG not GRU or EZE

I guess most people would go for the AA direct rather than go trans-atlantic twice when you don't need to at all...but this is FT and I think I have just found my next miles saving trip!!!:D:D:D

True, do it in F and you get to sample the CCR, thats one advantage over the direct AA flight !! :D

If the goal is to get to Brazil, then the best use of BA miles is to book LAN's superlative J class on its 763 aircraft. BAEC will allow you unlimited enroute stopovers (if the partner airline makes stops between your departure city and your destination) and on LAN you definitely could make stopovers enroute to GIG or GRU in LIM and SCL (and perhaps GYE, UIO and EZE, depending on the BAEC CS agent you speak to).

[On the way back to SFO you can travel via LHR at a small fraction of the fees quoted in the reverse direction.]

Does this SFO-GIG trick still work, I cant get it to give me all BA itineraries when I plug it in to the search engine.
