There did seem to be some sort of sliding scale - the longer it had been since you left, the lower down the priority and upgrade lists you went. Of course, the higher/more important you were the at the time you left, the better your starting position would be.

I've yet to work for a company that offers its retiring staff any benefits!!

Airlines are not the best payers hence the offer good staff travel benefits to try and attract staff. I've worked in the airlines before and could have got a similar job in another industry paying 20K+. Most airline staff are willing to sacrifice their pay for travel benefits. These benefits are only fair to offer after retirement if the staff members has completed the required number of years service.
