I'm looking at £5k+ for a week of escaping the woes of winter [we have them here in JER as well, grey and damp]. We don't want to be busy, we don't want complicated routings, we just want 'his and hers Kindles' somewhere warm and sunny-ish, with decent food and a bit of peace and quiet. So that's Anglesey off the plan, before anyone starts!!

Oh, and somewhere where we get a decent slab of TPs. Otherwise "USA 12a" has to be in Apr/May instead of May/Jun, with less reliable weather.

As I said earlier, we're going to wipe the white-board, and start again over the weekend ... taking on board all the great suggestions and recommendations you good people have.

We will not be joining the 'elders' migration to the Azores, Tenerife, Malaga or anything like that.
Worst case is "Cope with the weather at home, do USA 12a in Apr/May, and do a TP run to buy DF at LGW"
Best case is that 2 short-sighted old gits can work their way through all the options, and go somewhere sunny. Where? Dunno yet!!

Okay you seem to be desperate to get rid of that five grand....so I've been finking.
Winter in the UK means summer here....35c in January warm enough? Then you and your missus can be guests at Estancia HIDDY. Long sunny days can be spent beside the pool.....oops wrong pic.In the warm evenings young Pablo (always a hit with the ladies so keep an eye on him) will be on hand to serve you pre dinner cocktails while I count the days takings.
We specialise in local delicacies, catering for our vegetarian guests is a speciality of ours. Tired after all that you can retreat to your very own fully equipped rustic bungalow....all have great views out on to the pampa....the fresh air will do you the power of good.

So forget the Caribbean and get yourselves down here.......grab a WT+ sale fare and use miles to upgrade, that'll get rid of £2k at the most. That leaves you with £3k to play about with...I won't give you a week....I won't even give you two weeks.....I'm so generous I'll give you three weeks for £3k....what a bargain!!! ^

Ok, for me -
- BGI is nice, easy if you have kids though I would rent a villa on the west coast. Definitely wouldn't go all inclusive hotel and avoid the gap like the plague. If you don't have kids I wouldn't bother with BGI though, there are more interesting places
- floridia or Mia, both good suggestions. Personally not too fussed about the keys but MIA is a fun place for a week. Florida I would look at somewhere like Boca to stay
- west coast, now we're getting more fun. Lagonna beach or around there is nice for a week, probably not as hot as you'd like though
- Maldives - great place to go, if you've not been I would put above BGI, st Lucia, etc. If you have been go again
- Mexico - fly into cancun (do not, repeat, do not stay in cancun), there are plenty of nice resorts within a couple of hours of cancun where you can base yourself for a nice week. See chit initza (gave up on apple autocorrect!), lounge by the pool. Loook for an upscale hotel to avoid the hordes, Mexico is nice.
- CPT, great, you'd enjoy it

The challenge is fighting our way through the marketing bullshot ... and never ever having tried this 'all-inclusive' approach
I've done Almond Beach club on a Airline staff rate of $75 usd a night for the room and All Inclusive for both of us. It was barely worth it. That was 8 years ago.. I can't imagine its any better.
Skip the Caribbean, book an EZE out of Italy or come down to Phuket.

Value and miles.

What you're proposing is barely either.

If you want to nothing in the sun for a week I thing not would beat the Jalousie in St Lucia. The stunning location is a perfect place to jus vegitate. You don't need to do AI there - just the half board option which if you just eat one main meal a day means that all you have to pay on top is for drinks. Their cheapest room category - the Sugar Mill rooms is not showing on BA.com - you may have to contact the hotel direct for them. All of the villas and the Sugar Mill rooms have their own private plunge pools and all have butler service.

I love South East Asia but it's not the place to go for a week in the sun - for a first time you need at least 3 weeks to make the most of it.

Last time I did it, it was for 2 1/2 years ... I loved it

Thanks for the other suggestion, but I think we may be binning the Caribbean idea entirely. However, we shall research your kind suggestion, as we have all the others.

HIDDY ... I didn't thank you for your kind offer: sorry. It must have taken ages to compile that brochure, so I was doubly rude. Mucho apologetico.
Perhaps not what we seek, although the burning unidentifiable meats do seem quite interesting

Do tell us where you decide to go in the end.

I will, I assure you. Very few of you out there will understand why, and it would be too hard to explain anyway!!

We have found it an amazing challenge, looking at the Planet on Google Earth, searchingba.com, Tripadvisor and load of other places ... and realising that there are so many places we don't want to go [for many different reasons]. It's been quite a spooky exercise of self-analysis, in many ways.

Having a day off tomorrow ... we're both screen-blind!!

Let someone else make the choice for you.

Go to Thomas Cook, book a £300 accommodation-allocated-on-arrival trip to Lanzarote and take it from there.

You'll save money and will get a surprise when you get there
