An “official POUG” is defined (for the purposes of this wiki) as the rate that appears in red on the MMB/BA app. It is NOT the rate offered at the airport (please see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...ng-thread.html), or the rate offered when you click on the “Upgrade my class of travel with money” link from within MMB, or the “Upgrade to the next available cabin” blue/grey banner in the app.
  • All POUGs earn full TPs and Avios for the upgraded cabin, subject to the original booking being paid for with cash.
  • POUGs *ARE* offered on Hand-Baggage Only fares, if available
  • POUGs only become available after 48 hours of making your booking, until any time up to, and including OLCI. After being checked in you will not be offered a POUG.
  • POUGs do not seem to become available for travel agent bookings, until 2-3 days before departure (YMMV)
  • POUGs cannot be requested from Service Centres, except that occasionally BA.com will not proceed with a POUG online and display a message inviting you to call the Service Centre to complete the transaction.
  • After a POUG has been purchased, the ticket become non changeable and non refundable, apart from government taxes.

Please add to this list as required, and include the month/year when the POUG is offered to you.

However, if you want to MFU from WT to WT+, you can only ever MFU from Y, B and H booking classes (the three highest in WT) anyway, in all circumstances. You can never MFU a deep discount WT ticket - it's not allowed under the MFU rules.
Thanks very much.

Trying to get my head around all these booking classes as am very new to LH flying. It seems, in that case, the best way to use avios really would be to book WT+ and then MFU, if available, from there to CW.

You will find a lot of people here agreeing with you that this is the absolute best value use of Avios!

When you think of booking classes, the easiest way to think of it is to consider the four cabin classes (First, Club World, World Traveller Plus, and World Traveller) as divided into several "sub-classes", with a sliding scale from cheapest to most expensive seats. On flights that are expected to be busy, BA will assign more "expensive" seats and fewer "cheap" seats, and vice-versa. Y, B, or H class World Traveller seats will generally be more expensive than T class World Traveller Plus seats, so Upgradiosing (the new unofficial name for MFUing) from WT to WT+ is rather pointless.

I have a LGW-AMS coming up and upgrade options are more than a straight CE ticket. Yet there seems very open availability on the flight for CE. Am I likely to only see an offer at OLCI or should I not OLCI and ask at the airport?

You may or may not. No one one this board (apart from BA ground/ticketing staff!) will be able to tell you definitely one way or another.

In my experience, you are likely to get an offer of a POUG. If not, you can OLCI and still ask at the airport (makes sure you get your preferred ET seat if there is no availability when you reach the LGW ticket desk).

LHR - JFK flight

Hi,

We are due to fly to JFK from LHR on 19/12/11 in WT (BA175). I booked a holiday in NY through ba.com. I would like to upgrade to WT+ using cash however the upgrade option is greyed out in MMB.

Is upgrading not possible on every flight? Will this option be available closer to departure?

Thanks

PS: this is a great forum - very helpful threads re collecting avios.^

Welcome to FT ^

As you have booked a BA Holiday (flight + hotel, or flight + car), you are not likely to be offer the pro-active upgrade online. I would call BA and ask if there are any £179 upgrades available for your particular flight.

If not, wait until you arrive at JFK and ask at the ticket desk.

Not every flight has the pro-active offer - depends on a deeply guarded secret the BA Revenue Management team hold!

Thanks for replying.

I gave BA a call and they quoted me £229 for the upgrade (WT to WT+) + £100 for changing cabin/ticket (£329).

Is this normal? Should I hold out hoping that it will fall to the £179 you mentioned? I appreciate it is probably a busy flight and the cost may go up.

Thanks^

No worries at all!

That sounds like a non-pro-active upgrade because you are being charged the change fee. It is entirely up to you if you go for it, and really want to travel in WT+.

Personally, I would not be able to justify the £329 to move from WT to WT+ for such a short flight. I would hold out and maybe enquire at the airport to see if there is a cheaper upgrade available.

It is your call if you can afford the extra cash to justify the cost for flying WT+ instead of WT. Let us know what you decide

Hi Kat

Is the quote one way or return?

I booked my holiday with Ba.com I phoned up to get a quote for WT to WT+ and there were 3 of us they said they could waive 2 of the change fees.

I ended up getting a great deal to upgrade to club (I presume due to the 2012 offer it was lower than the WT+ price I was quoted) so took that instead.

I'd say check the price difference between that and club too, and also ask whether they can do anything with the change fee.

I did a proactive upgrade on my last trip in April, I think it was £300 return, there were no upgrade options available at the airport.

Also you could check how many seats have been booked in WT+ (if you haven't already) and they have ones you want, as I personally wouldn't want to upgrade without a decent option of seats if poss.

Hi,

Its the one way price for the upgrade. I did ask for the CW price as well on the off chance but was quoted £5110

I think I will probably take the earlier advice of trying at the airport.

Thanks

Yikes! That is steep.

You can always check again via phone closer to the time, hope you get lucky!

Ended up upgrading straight from WT (M) to CW on LHR-DFW this morning for £499. Not a bad deal, I think. They also offered WT+ for £179, but it was only the middle seats that were available.

First time flying CW, very nice experience.

Edit: I should mention, I asked at the airport, and it took them a while to get it right. MMB never showed anything because it was an AA codeshare. I called BA to see if I could do the same for my return flight ORD-LHR, and they said no, either at the airport or through AA. And also, no additional AA miles for this. Very annoying, since it was not cheap and my boarding pass shows as if it's just paid J.

Since my booking was with my companies travel agent I could not upgrade in advance. So I asked about availability of the upgrades from WT to CW on SEA-LHR route at the airport (December 2nd). The cost was $900 USD, however they needed to check on availability of CW catering. While I was thinking on whether to jump on this offer, the agent got a response on her walkie that the catering was not available making this decision moot. Oh well...

We're flying in February from LGW to MLE in WT+ on our honeymoon. I can see there are still some available seats in CW, however due to buying a T ticket, the upgrade is way too much to pay with cash.

Does anyone know if they offer pro-active offers on this route?
