An “official POUG” is defined (for the purposes of this wiki) as the rate that appears in red on the MMB/BA app. It is NOT the rate offered at the airport (please see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...ng-thread.html), or the rate offered when you click on the “Upgrade my class of travel with money” link from within MMB, or the “Upgrade to the next available cabin” blue/grey banner in the app.
  • All POUGs earn full TPs and Avios for the upgraded cabin, subject to the original booking being paid for with cash.
  • POUGs *ARE* offered on Hand-Baggage Only fares, if available
  • POUGs only become available after 48 hours of making your booking, until any time up to, and including OLCI. After being checked in you will not be offered a POUG.
  • POUGs do not seem to become available for travel agent bookings, until 2-3 days before departure (YMMV)
  • POUGs cannot be requested from Service Centres, except that occasionally BA.com will not proceed with a POUG online and display a message inviting you to call the Service Centre to complete the transaction.
  • After a POUG has been purchased, the ticket become non changeable and non refundable, apart from government taxes.

Please add to this list as required, and include the month/year when the POUG is offered to you.

I actually had a pretty good track record on BA when I was a non-BA OWE, but I think it was highly route and day of the week and cabin-dependent. My track record was gained on a specific day of the week on a specific route where there is a huge number of tour group passengers, which I assume would not qualify for op-ups, and there probably weren't many BA status holders in WT+.

However, when I was a non-BA OWE I wanted to pay to go from CW to F and felt a bit missed out when they weren't offering it but op-upped someone. I haven't encountered any of that since, except a similar situation myself. I ended up getting op-upped when the airport upgrade quote was more than the difference I would have been charged online and was dithering. I don't know why they wanted to get rid of me from the counter pronto but it worked in my favour.

I still don't like the op-up lottery despite that, and I prefer to pay a reasonable upgrade fees to chancing the op-up lottery. I suspect I'll still dislike it when I eventually hold a CCR card... I don't do uncertainties too well!

I still think EK has the better offering here. You can even upgrade using miles when you're on board, if you don't like your companion (subject to having at least Silver status with EK).

It's handy because you can assess the cabin before having to make your decision. You don't upgrade from Y before you get to the airport, use a load of miles, and then see that you could have had 4 Y seats to yourself if you'd stayed where you were.

It also rarely matters if there's award availability, either. If there's a seat in F and you have status, chances are the purser will process the upgrade.

It's the one big thing I'd like BA to change.

Pro-active Upgrade cost tracking thread

So - slightly OT, but...

I got a POUG offer by e-mail from IB today. It was laughable. €440 for Y>J on the red-eye MAD-TLV...

I'm currently having a booking to DXB over Christmas which is hilarious. Both flights are totally zeroed out and it will be very interesting to see what happens. I presume these flights will produce a lot of IDB. Can't imagine that people will upgraded to First as even that is zeroed out and all seats taken! Can't imagine they'll offer proactive upgrades though. I wouldn't mind to be placed in EK C or F to be taken to DXB as my ongoing flight to CMB is already on EK.

One possibility is, that Y is over sold, and with the amount of elites in Y, might equal the same amount of seats in WT+,CW and F. So if BA zero's out all fare buckets than no more tickets will be sold. I would love to hear what happens with this.

It's definitely NF 777 ( 12 seats ). I definitely wouldn't mind being upgraded but I can't imagine that this will happen. ( Btw. I'm in CW )

CW looks more likely than First, but I'm sure someone more qualified than me at guessing will come along shortly.

Just noticed I've been offered a €79 POUG for FCO-LHR in a few days. I haven't seen one for ages. It's on a redemption, so let's see what extra I get for my €79: lounge access, Tier points, Avios, 2 bags, fast track, priority boarding, hot breakfast. Ok, maybe next time...

For completeness, I've also been offered a €97 (yes, 97) euro upgrade for the return journey.

Data point: I just upgraded a FRA-LHR flight, recently booked for next July, for 69 EUR.

That's slightly more than the price of the underlying cheapo ticket (and seems good value for 30 TPs that I might well need).

Was on the same flights to DXB last christmas. 777 as the a/c type all the way thru until about 1 week before when the email came thru advising seat changes. Looked in MMB and they had "upgraded" the a/c type to a 744. In this situation, I'd anticipate something similar occuring in the next few days.

In fairness you do get a bit more... empty middle seat, wider seat, more personal service, upgraded beverage selection, disembarkation amongst the first.

Good to hear! I anticipate the same. Can't believe they'll let a 12F 777 fly this route regarding this load. How was the upgrade situation? Lots of gold card holders on this route during this time?
