LONDON, March 12 (Reuters) - British Airways <BAY.L> cabin crew will walk out for seven days later this month after talks between the airline and labour unions aimed at averting a strike broke down, dealing a fresh blow to the loss-making carrier.

The Unite union on Friday said BA cabin crew would strike for three days from March. 20 and for four days from March. 27.

By law, Unite had until next Monday to announce actions, giving seven days notice of any walkout.
"This will probably cost BA something in the region of 20 million pounds ($29.84 million) a day but maybe less since they have some contingency plans in place," said Davy Stockbrokers aviation analyst Stephen Furlong.

BA has trained staff from other areas of the company to fill-in as cabin crew during the strike and has said it will hire 23 fully-crewed planes from charter companies to help run flights from Heathrow.

The union's 13,000 cabin crew members have twice voted for industrial action as part of a dispute over job losses and changes to working practices, but a 12-day Christmas strike was halted following a successful legal challenge from BA.

BA crew have decided not to strike over the Easter holidays, which are spread across the first week of April, because of a public backlash over the planned duration of its December strike.

BA shares, which have risen by a quarter so far this year, were 1.4 percent up at 233.8 pence by 1115 GMT.

Chance of a flight on the 24th being absolutely safe ? I'm guessing I'll have no clue until the morning of the flight! Still none the wiser really!

In the recent discussions and negotiations, BA must have already factored in the costs of a strike and decided to let Unite go ahead. I do not see the strike having any impact on BA's position now, or helping the Cabin Crew achieve their aims. BA has also been busy preparing for the strike to minimise the impacts on its financial position and on its customers. Why do Unite still think that calling a strike will achieve anything positive - it's far too late now.

The City seems to think that BA have everything under control as the share price is up 3.1p on the day at 233.6 and hasn't dropped since the announcement.

Well I'm taking a big deep breath in! Not flying during the dates but just after the second set.

Have flights from PHL to LHR on March 23/24, and April 1.

Do you think flights from PHL will be cancelled on the evening of March 23 to LHR, and have flight from LHR to NCE on morning of 24th? Son is getting married in Nice over the weekend, should we wait and see or try to re-book? Thanks.

Looks like we are affected as we have flights LHR to Houston on 27th March. Game on to BA indeed - much as I want to travel and I hope I can still get away on my trip, I would have been annoyed had BA management caved in on this.

Hmm. Dates seem a little odd, but will, I guess, cause maximum disruption to BA as they just about reposition after the first wave, then the second wave starts.

I wonder if Ms Malone (or some other similarly positioned senior BASSA member) is flying on the 23rd Nd back on the 26th. After all the poor negotiation, it wouldn't surprise me if these dates worked out well for certain individuals high up within BASSA.

I still don't get what they're striking for or what they hope to achieve.

Well irony of ironies after having travelled every week for the last 2 years I currently have no flights booked during the strike period. I have 17 Mar and 1 April booked so am personally pleased not to have been affected (even if possibly missing out on compo miles if they choose to award some).

My sympathies to other FTers who have had plans disrupted. I hope there is still an opportunity to avoid these strikes happening.

I may have spoken too soon! Looking at the ticker at the moment (live, not the 20 minute delay) it is now only up 1.2p and did go down as far as 0.1p on the day. Looking at the recent trades since 11:00GMT it has been fairly even between buys vs sells.

Bugger! Hit on the 20th, hit on the 22nd, hit again on the 30th and wondering if my flight on the 31st will go west! (ie to Mexico). If Unite wanted a game of battleships with my flying schedule I'd say they sunk me in one salvo. Rats.

I have a LHR-TATL J on 3 April and was looking forward to my u/d relaxation ....

anyone any ideas as to where these may be sourced, given that my 747 may be out-of-position ?

Trying to book a couple of AMS flights. About 30 minutes ago I had option for LHR on 22nd. No longer. All AMS flight on 20-22 are gone... unbookable.
