Unless the cabin is already full (which your post suggests is not the case), then I think you can pre-allocate seats at any time even if you have a child on the booking, although obviously you may need to pay.

If you do not pre-allocate seats in advance, then with a child on the booking you should be allocated seats by BA about 5 days before the flight, so you are several steps ahead of the T-24h lottery.
