Friend is flying with BA to Durban connecting in Joburg. Am I correct in saying they need to clear customs, collect bags then recheck in?

Or.are bags checked through but they still need to clear customs?

Your friend will have to collect their bags, exit customs into the arrivals hall, and head upstairs to check bags for the flight to Durban. There used to be a re-check area just before entering the arrivals hall but I think that was only for SAA.

You are correct so advise your friend not to hang around if they have a tight connection time. There is fast track for eligible passengers on the JNB:DUR leg.
