(Peppa) Pigs on a Plane

I know how hard it is to travel with kids. I’ve travelled with my now 11 year olds to 24 countries and 5 continents. Sometimes they’ve been noisy. Sometimes they’ve misbehaved. Encouraged by the cabin crew they built tents on the way to Mauritius and I once awoke somewhere between Singapore and Sydney to find them standing on their seats and playing catch across the F cabin. I’ve always done my best to keep them entertained, fed and nipped bad behaviour in the bud but I’m far from perfect.

I think I’m reasonably empathetic to the challenges of travelling with children. Baby babbling is unavoidable as is the occasional kicking of seats and even a couple of pats on the head. But having to listen to 2.5 hours of Peppa Pig watched without headphones on a flight to Malaga this morning was a complete joke. Even my Bose noise cancelling headphones were insufficient to drown out the dulcet tones of Miss Rabbit. Is it now considered acceptable for parents of small children to do this?

The experience was topped off with a nappy change on the table between the A and C seats in CW just before landing.

For anyone wondering about how I dealt with it - I attempted to sleep and kept my mouth shut. Life’s too short to start a holiday with a row.

Perhaps a word to a flight attendant would have been in order?

I also generally avoid confrontations of this kind, but this is over the top. I've observed and heard adult passengers in First watch a film together without headphones. I spoke to the FA, who asked them to stop, which they did.

It just shows a complete and utter lack of consideration for other people. Do these people never stop to think ‘oooh, does everyone else around me actually want to hear this as well?” Obviously not.

I’ll admit our daughter (18 months old at the time) watched Peppa on an iPad without headphones- she was too small at the time to have kept them on and it would have been more of a “thing” for her to keep putting them on and off. We kept the volume low enough that she could hear, and it’s possible someone near us heard it as well. We were very aware of the people around us and made a calculated trade- possible Peppa vs cranky toddler for 8 hours in CW.

What you’re describing doesn’t sound like that at all- this would have driven me nuts! Bless you, OP and you’re patience.

The B seat table probably won’t get a good clean for a few days 😳

I had long ago decided that the Pig must Die. Then my sister became a Grandmother (which I now suppose makes her Great Rich B1tch) and I am smitten with my great niece. She is smitten with Peppa. I tell you this for a reason. RichB believes that she was put on this earth to fly First. Her husband who I adore refuses to budge out of Business. I was always had concerns that one day I might be working one day and end up serving Her Highness - this never happened.

What did happen and this was not that long ago - they were travelling to a Caribbean island with BA. My great niece was entertained with Peppa on an Ipad with volume. Unfortunately another child was doing the very same elsewhere in the cabin but this was loud. Before my sister realised that she had gone she heard a shriek and screaming from the back of the cabin. My 20 month year old niece had gone back and smacked the other Ipad on the floor and was shouting at the other child. Her command of English was excellent - maybe too excellent for a child that age. I suspect that the Au Pair or whatever she is watches Geordy Shore - my sister swears that she doesn't. Anyhow my B-in-Law and Sister flew down the cabin and apologise only to find that once that had been resolved the two children somehow sat together and watched Peppa Pig together. The Ipad was undamaged and the volume was much lower.

So, that actually sorted that problem out, However I fear that this Ipad/Iphone film being watched without headphones does disturb others and the crew should put a stop to it.

I was in SQ F early last year and dozed off early in the flight. I awoke to sounds of a tablet being played loudly. The only other family in F had apparently decided it was cool for their kids to listen to their IPad without headphones.

I spoke to an FA about it and they seemed to be sympathetic. They went to talk to the parents and parents refused to make their kids wear headphones.

Again, this was SQ F. Absolutely pathetic experience.

I think asking the Flight Attendant to have the child put on headphones is reasonable. The other option is to put on some noise cancelling headphones.

Watching anything on a phone/tablet without headphones, unless very quiet, is unacceptable IMO. That includes children’s entertainment. Travelling with children doesn’t mean you can ignore common decency to your fellow passengers.

As for changing a baby at your seat, that’s frankly disgusting. I would have been all over the call bell and getting staff to intervene ASAP.

Extremely rude watching/listening to content without headphones in a public space. As for the nappy change... Completely unacceptable. I don't understand why the parent would think that is acceptable. There's nappy changing facilities in the toilet.

I was on a BA flight last year and a child a few rows ahead was watching an iPad without headphones. A member of the cabin crew quickly intervened. No one had the chance to complain as he was so quick at telling the child/parents. Very impressed.

Thanks!

I guess I can’t, with a few exceptions, under why in earth anyone would change a kid on their seat. I get it if the seatbelt light doesn’t get turn off (and I’ve been on a flight like that), and it’s a longer (4+ hour) flight. But, then I have a kid who craps his pants and would rather sit in his poo than endure a diaper change.

I really don’t get the whole not wearing headphones. I’m hoping to travel with my kiddo just before he turns two, and we are already practice with headphones so he can get used to the idea that the sound comes though the headphones.
