rental cell phone in Rio?
 

In the US I mostly rely on email, don't use a cell phone much. My service is a Verizon family-plan add-on.; my phone is an LG (I think 7100) But at meetings and traveling it's handy to have a cell phone to make plans.

Suggestions for renting a cell phone in Rio? The number would be for emergency from the US and pretty short incoming/outgoing calls in Rio to make appointments, confirm things, ...

I Googled a little. What I found seemed expensive, weekly fees plus $1/minute local.

If it's for very limited use, it might be cheaper to buy a phone from Mobal. You keep the phone forever. The per minute rates are high but the phone is $99 with no fees -- including no monthly fees, no activation fee, no expiration.

Even cheaper is if you get an unlocked quad-band phone somewhere (or maybe tri-band might work). Then you'd just buy a SIM locally in Brazil and use that. Mobal also sells their SIM without the phone for $10.
