I'm not in Rio, but I am in Tiradentes (Minas Gerais) spending Carnaval. This is so much fun!!

Will arrive in Rio on Wednesday, so I will miss the 4 "official" days of fun, but I'm under the impression that there are still some parades and competitions going on for few days after.

be sure to check out a nice bar/restaurant called The Bedroom, a very cool place where you recline on a bed rather than sit at a table

Well it does quieten down once Wed comes. If you want to get a flavour of Carnaval you should head to the Sambodromo for the Parade of Champions (Desfile dos Campeões) next Saturday night when the 7 best schools from Carnaval parade again. Tickets cost about half as much as for Carnaval proper. Try and get Sector 5 or 7. As a guide in 2004 Sector 7 was R$110 and Sector 5 was R$85 (face value). If you want more detailed guidance let me know.

I'm sure you would as Carnaval is the gayest week of the year in Rio. ;)

We are here on an gay Atlantis cruise...
 

Arrived yestereday on the gay Atlantis cruise aboard the Insignia. The beaches are packed, the weather hot and it's definitely more packed than New Year's (if you can believe that).

The gayest neighborhooed parade is at 4:00 pm tomorrow in Ipanema followed by the the most popular ball known as the "Gay Ball" held at LaScala in Leblon. In fact, it's so popular that they telivise (sp) it live on Brazilian T.V. and apparently there's a "red carpet" with all of the tv stations jockeying for postion. We snatched up tickets for it $45US. The sales are limited to 5000.

I'll write up a review later...By the way, it's very hot here!! Yesterday 32 Cel.

It's address is Estrada do Joá, 150 - São Conrado. It's on the right hand side as you head towards Barra.

BTW it's now called Espaço Joá. I haven't been to the club in either of its incarnations as I've heard mixed reports about it.

I was referring to events in Cardiff yesterday which also involved 4 of something. ;)

It's one of the biggets bailes at Scala but others such as Baile Preto e Vermelho also sell out and most if not all are televised live on TV (on the Band channel IIRC). The Gay ball seems to be more travesti (tranny) oriented if the interviewees are anything to go by.

BTW, if you think it's hot in Rio wait till you go to a ball at Scala. Not the most comfortable place I've been to.
