Question Sao Paulo hotels for the leisure traveller

After sorting through the many messages about Sao Paulo, I realize that it is a city for business travellers. That being said, I am going to be staying there for a couple of nights as part of a trip combining Rio, Iguassu Falls, and Buenos Aires. Does anybody have any recommendations for inexpensive hotels? Since I am there on leisure many of the previously mentioned recommendations (such as the Hilton Morumbi) are unappealing since they seem to be far from the "center" of the city. Also, I am travelling alone so safety is definitely a factor. I get the impression that the Jardins neighborhood would be a good place to stay, is this correct?

Also, has anybody had any experience with the Metro? Is it a safe, dependable way to get around the city? It sounds like traffic is kind of miserable...
