Brazil visa question

I went to Brazil 2 years ago and got a tourist visa for the trip which is valid for 5 years. A couple months ago, my passport expired and I got a new passport. The still-valid Brazil visa is thus in my old cancelled passport. I'm going to Rio soon so I went to the Brazilian consulate ready to get a new visa, but the agent there said I just needed to bring my old passport with the still-valid visa. I may be being a bit paranoid about this, but since I wouldn't be allowed entry into Brazil if the advice was mistaken, has anyone else obtained entry to Brazil with a current visa stamped in a cancelled passport (along with a current passport)? Thanks!

I have not entered using that method but what you have been told is correct. Having an expired passport with a valid entry visa along with your current passport will get you in. Brazil immigration officials seem (at least to me) to be very lax, so I wouldn't worry at all.

I've read this, too, but I think it was on this site. Another thing you might want to do is call the International division of your airline. They get fined if fly someone into a country without the right documentation, so they ought to have an expert on hand. If you go to the airport frequently, you could also ask at the check-in desk.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: a passenger may enter Brazil with a
valid visa in an expired passport provided:
- the page which contains the valid visa in the expired
passport has not been invalidated or mutilated in a manner
as to make the visa illegible.
- the passenger holds also a valid passport of the same
nationality.
- a handwritten annotation does not appear in the passport
that passenger has been advised to obtain a new visa in
valid passport.
IN ALL CASES, TRANSFER OF A VALID VISA TO A VALID PASSPORT
IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You should have no problem. I've entered Brazil many times with a valid visa in an expired/cancelled passport without any trouble.

I've done the exact same thing in Australia several times. No problem.

I've done it with an expired ppt to Brasil and valid visa. No problem.

Thank you StartinSanDiego.

Because there's been an ongoing consolidated Brazil Visa thread in this forum, and it has more resources (updated wiki) and much more and comprehensive discussion, I'll move the last few current posts to the consolidated thread, close this thread and invite all to participate in the consolidated thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/brazi...rs-merged.html
