Sheraton Grand Rio becoming a Marriott?

When I was surfing the net today, I saw an article (from June 17) in Portuguese staring that Marriott decided to convert the Sheraton Grand Rio to a Marriott. Here is the link:

https://veja.abril.com.br/blog/radar/sheraton-do-rio-vai-mudar-de-nome/

Has anyone heard anything about this? If true, I hope that it will not be before August 1st as I am spending the whole month of July at the Sheraton Grand Rio and from what I understand there is great treatment for Starwood Platinum members, and a nice, top-floor Club Lounge.

Please update your post as I am going to Rio next month and trying to decide on which hotel to use for relatively short stays.

I tried to reserve a Rio Sheraton this morning on Marriott web but when it sent me to the old SPG web that web refused to accept my Marriott number which I cannot change.

The IT issue you've had with the reservation is probably due to the poor IT integration between Marriott and SPG.

As for the supposed reflagging, I think it's much more likely to have been a reporter confused by the whole merger. I can hardly imagine the logic in reflagging an "iconic" property like the Sheraton in Rio.
Xeno likes this.
