What's with the netting in the new GIG T2?
 

Just after security and on the way down to passport control, if you look up it's hard to avoid the netting overhead. It's common to see this on the windows of some apartments that have children. So, is this same idea; to stop people falling/jumping? It looks bizarre and ugly in what should have been a modern and completely refurbished airport terminal and I wonder if the architects somehow left something really basic and important out of the plans and this is their solution to that mistake.

I hate that netting! Are Brazilian children more prone to falling from apartment windows than children of other nationalities??

Having said that, I haven't noticed the netting at GIG. Will make sure to check it out next time.

Maybe Brazilian children fall from apartment windows more often even in other countries that have different window architecture? Or than children of French or German or Italian nationality in Brazil (per capita)?

Other countries with tall buildings have sealed windows and central air conditioning, or door and window screens to keep insects out, and sometimes bars specifically so children don't fall from windows. Even with window screens. quite a few US kids fall, usually to their deaths, every year.

I have seen few buildings with screens in Brazil. Most Brazilians seem to think that they block the breeze. Bars are usually installed to keep out burglars.

The question should more specifically be whether Brazilian children are more prone to falling from apartment windows than those from (tropical) countries where window architecture is similar.
