You say that you "Sometimes late at night (10-11PM)" take a run along the beach. I think you have been lucky and I recommend that you read about the crime statistics in Rio.
There are robberies along the beaches even during the day. At night, your odds of getting mugged or worse go up considerably. - I am not sure, who you are trying to scare? |
You'll see people running, walking, cycling at all hours. Even when just walking I didn't carry valuables I was afraid of losing, but still enjoyed being there. There are signs painted to indicate where pedestrians vs. cyclists should go. There are lots of organized groups, inclduing the running and beer drinking Hash House Harriers, one of many such groups worldwide, which run (or walk, if you prefer) in various areas: http://www.riohhh.com/

Of course running is safe
Why would you rob a runner - they are hard to catch and all the assets they have on them are a few bucks for an emergency Gatorade. Come on!

If you get a chance, try running at Lagoa. Probably one of the most scenic runs will you ever seen. Afterwards try a cold coconut water to cool off and good luck!
