GRU to limit flights in 2011?
I read this on another site:
"The number of flights to Brazil's main airport, São Paulo's Guarulhos (GRU) will be reduced by half in 2011 from March through December to allow for building extensions of the runways." " PANROTAS reports concern in the travel industry that plans for diverting flights to other airports haven't been determined yet. Since GRU is Brazil's biggest and busiest airport, this will affect millions of travelers." Does anyone know if this is true? I travel to GRU often. If this news report is correct, my plans for 2011 will need a major realignment. - |
I am in Brazil, though in Fortaleza (1500 miles away). I haven't heard about any largescale closing, but have read in the past about intentions to funnel more flights to Viracopos-Campinas Airport. Since the downtown SP Congonhas Airport is already considered too busy, I could see more flights going to Campinas. If the report you cite is true, I assume it has to do with prep for the 2014 World Cup. Of course, in Brazil you have to take the announcement of any largescale plans with a grain (or more) of salt. I anticipate a lot of chaos in airports during the World Cup and Olympics, but hope I'm pleasantly surprised.
