Zone 1->8 vs 1->2->8
On the Diamond Club "How to Spend Miles" chart, Zone 1 to Zone 8 is 70k miles. However Zone 1 to Zone 2 is 12k and then Zone 2 to Zone 8 is 50k, giving only 62k total.
A flight within Zone 2 is listed 20k, which is also surprising. Are these the wrong way round? 1->2 = 20k and 2->2 = 12k would seem to make more sense. Did they just screw up the chart, or can you really go UK -> Japan on less points by going via zone 2?

The miles are correct : this is an 'anomoly' on the award chart : Z2-Z8 requires considerably fewer miles than Z1-Z8.
The strategy, as discussed at length here on the board, is to book the Z2-Z8 and a separate 'positioning' award/flight from Z1 to Z2.
By doing this, you also avoid the high cost of UK airport duty for premium cabin awards.

Thanks. I expected that it had been discussed here, but the search doesn't work so well without knowing the magic words. Now that I know to search for 'positioning' it turns up much more for me to read!
