Japan Redemption advice

Hi all,

Am considering a redemption to Japan as it sounds a fascinating place and a good use of diamond club points while they still are good value. Your advice would be much appreciated as advice here has enabled me to squeeze the best out of award redemptions in the past.

My current thinking is BHD - LHR - ??? - KIX and HIJ - NRT (stopover) - LHR - BHD

For the outgoing route to Osaka, am unsure who to fly with (in J). Am divided between LH and TK. I have flown LH F (from KUL to BKK) before and while good, I can't say I was overly impressed even when compared to other J experiences I have had. I have heard mixed reports about TK, so am nervous of them (though would like to be convinced otherwise). Am flying CA and OZ later on the year and plan NH for my return, so avoiding them as I want to fly someone new.

For my return route, I would like a stopover in Tokyo. The ANA tool seems to suggest flying into Tokyo Haneda and out of Tokyo Narita is valid. Would I be able to book a stopover in this way with bmi?

Also, vaguely remember reading somewhere that ANA tool shows award availability for NH flights for its own members, but *A award availability on the same flights is more limited. Is this the case and if so, how is the best way to check this.

Thanks for any advice.
Sean

P.S. I know that flying from Zone 2 and from DUB would be cheaper for me. Am just too lazy to do that!

I would suggest trying NZ to HKG (no fuel surcharge collected by BMI) if they have space and then HKG-KIX, or perhaps Swiss through KIX or NRT which also has a pretty solid product in C. TK is supposed to be good in C (especially the catering) but if you're unlucky, I believe there's a chance that you could get one of the old-config A340 to KIX or NRT.

I flew LHR-NRT//HND-GMP so it should be no problems having a stopover with HND arrival and NRT departure.

In my experience, ANA availability on the ANA tool has always matched the availability on BMI. It could be different if you log in as ANA elite member, but if you're a general member on ANA then it should be the same.

If C&M from Z2-Z8, you do end up saving 10k miles and over 150 in cash and APD, though - for me, it's almost always worth it.

Don't think of Zone 2 as lazyness - think of it as a free trip to Copenhagen, Rome etc! The saving on APD (10 Y to CPH v 80 J to NRT - and a lot more than 80 if you go after November 2009) will pay for an overnight in CPH and your flight, plus you save the miles (10k is worth another 100-150+). I'd recommend you do stay over as it minimises the risks if your LON-CPH is delayed.

I just did this btw on a LHR-CPH (seperate ticket), before CPH-ZRH-NRT-stopover-ICN, in F. See the thread below for some thoughts on my zone 2 positioning and also quantifies my saving for a one-way flight. As I was travelling in December it saved 100 APD per person, as well as the miles.

Personally I'd also recommend the Swiss C (But I am a Swiss fan), which I'd expect to be pretty good and goes to quite a few of the big asian cities (HKG/NRT I can think of), or NH from LHR-NRT directly (not sure on their C product, but, might be reasonable and probably pretty consistent)

I don't think stopovers in the same cities are going to be a problem at all, if the agent questions just mention they're both in Tokyo, should be enough - maybe get around that by saying "Tokyo NRT" and "Tokyo HND" to reduce confusion.

SPD, There are some really good fares (base fare 9.99 one way) at the minute on Aer Lingus ex Aldergrove to Milan (Z2), from where you can pick up Lufthansa Italia/Swiss/Turkish etc to connect onwards. Probably cheaper than petrol + parking at DUB!
