Through checking in bags
 

I am connecting to a BD flight from an SK flight. They are on two seperate tickets. I would like to through check the bags so that I don't have to to lug them from T3 to T1- even though I have 4 hours between flights and can collect the bags and re-check them in (if my inbound is on time- touchwood:D).

I know that BD will not through check in bags on seperate tickets, but unless BD has specifically told them not to do it, SK will do this for me (as they have done this several times in the past).

My questions are:
1. Is it possible to through check the bags or has BD told other airlines not to do it?
2. Will BD create any problems at the time of checking in at LHR if I show them my baggage tags, considering that I have a BD ticket originating at LHR?

1. Yes, this will be OK
2. No, just show them the tag. Do show the tag, even if you have used OLCI as they will need to match the bag to the passenger in their own system.

Last time I did this was an LY flight to LHR and BD to Belfast. Seperate ticket but no problem with interlining the baggage.

Didn't work on the back to TLV.

My experience is spotty. Sometimes it's OK sometimes not.

As SK is also *A it may help.

SK is a very helpful airline- they have through checked my bags with AF, SU, 9W,JJetc. without any fuss (it helps that the staff at SVG which is a tiny airport knows me as I am a "regular").
Not a problem on the way back as I am spending a couple of days in LON before hitting the road, so no need of through check-in.

I agree about SK - I have always found them very helpful about checking through bags. This has included checking through bags with bmi. The other way around is a different matter unfortunately :(

I will be transiting through London from KQ to bmi in January, and will be trying to check through luggage. Will post experience.

Hmm... Im a little concerned as I've booked from MAN - ORD - SFO using bmi/UA in March, and im taking two cases, roll-aboard and ski's, I am hoping that my baggage would be checked straight through from MAN to SFO... and not have to juggle with it all in ORD.

My ticket was booked on expedia, so I would have thought it's an linked journey (?) ticket in each direction and not two journeys?

Does anyone have any guidance they can offer?... Ta, Andy

Well, you'll have to claim it at ORD and take your baggage through customs just like everybody else entering the U.S.

Are you on one ticket? If so, no problems.

Even with a through-tag you will have to retrieve your bags and re-deposit them at ORD customs anyway so the only benefit of through-checking is that you don't have to lug your bags from T5 to T1 in ORD.

Yeh, Im on one ticket with expedia, I bought it as MAN > SFO.... I know I gotta grab it, drag it though customs and dump it on the "onward" conveyor belt.. but I was concerned that If bmi don't do thru-checking of bags that I'd have to collect it and then go outside, change terminals and then go through check in with United.... and as im flying business with bmi I shouldn't have to pay more for traveling with ski's.. where as united only allow you to take 2 bags in domestic 1st I read...

The UA staff in the baggage re-check area at T5 always seem happy to tag and collect my bags there even when I am not through-checked to the final destination. They have the ability to issue boarding cards too IIRC.

AFAIK, BD will not issue UA boarding passes. You can drop off the bags and get UA BPs immediately after customs clearance.
