BMI Checked baggage weight allowance
Can someone help me on this one?
Flying from MSP to LHR in October with Icelandair in Saga class & Transferring to a BMI flight to MAN in coach. Will BMI accept my icelandair allowance or will i somehow have to reduce my allowance to 20kg in total? I notice that BMI want to charge an extortionate £5.00 per kg excess just to fly to MAN which is really taking the p*&^ for such a short trip. |
If you are booked on a through ticket from MSP to MAN, then the higher allowance applies I believe.
However, it sounds like you have separate tickets from MSP-LHR and LHR-MAN. I'm afraid in that case the fact that you had a higher allowance in business class with Icelandair will be irrelevant to them. How over are you going to be? A couple of kilos may be overlooked, 15kg extra probably won't! PS - Excess fees starting at £5 per kilo is actually pretty common on domestic flights - look at Jet2, Ryanair, Flybe etc. while BA has a whole new system which may or may not be better depending on your point of view! |
If on one ticket, Icelandair will check your luggage thru to MAN, it won't be an issue. The 'piece' luggage weight concept will be in effect. Same on the return.
If on two tickets, at MSP just show then your bmi ticket. If Icelandair will check your luggage thru to MAN, again, it won't be an issue. Your problem will be on the return, bmi will only check your bags to LHR (their rules) and your allowance will be 20 KG. |
If you are *G then you are allowed to carry up to 40KG. I did this before, ie MAN-LHR up to 80KG and straight went through without any problem.

Our booking on the BMI form says we've got the cheapest fare but business on our Icelandair ticket. |
*G = If you have a gold frequent flyer card from one of the Star Alliance airlines - like United, TAP Air Portugal or Air New Zealand.
Gold card holders get an additional baggage allowance. |
