Flying with United

Sorry but quite new to the miles system. I am wondering if anyone can help.

I am flying to the USA with United from LHR on what they say is a W class ticket. Will I get BMI DC miles (membership & destination) on this? BMI say I should.

The reason I ask is that United say a Full Price economy ticket is the only one which accures miles which I thought did not include W as this is discounted (or so I thought).

I think it is a bit rubbish if you get nothing from the flight when I could go AA, which has more legroom. Although I am beginning to wonder if it is worth getting to Silver / Gold status anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark,
Welcome to FT. I flew quite a bit on UA earlier this year and earned miles on Q, H, L, T, V and S class tickets. According to the BMI website, UA 'W' tickets also earn miles at the 1.0x rate. Many European carriers cheap tickets earn at 0.25x rate!

Check out this link. The date at the top can be misleading at times, since they fiddle with the tables and don't change the date. I have a copy printed out for quick reference!

Yes, full x1 miles on W tickets. Enjoy.

I'm not sure this is still the case. Bear in mind that United has a seating section at the front of economy called Economy Plus which gives a pretty generous 36" legroom and is less unpleasant than the rest. These are pre-assigned to Star Silver and Star Gold flyers but they fill up the spare seats with other 'ordinary' passengers when the flight gets full. It wouldn't hurt to ask at reservations, again at check-in and again at the gate to see if any of these E+ seats are free for you.

You are right: this is rubbish. UA agents would not know, anyway, which fares accrue miles with DC.

Not any more: AA is withdrawing MRTC from its planes.

Depends who you usually fly with and at what fare. Clearly, if you fly mostly BD on very low fares, status will be of little use. SIlver will also be of limited use on other carriers, as *A S has few benefits. Still, if you regularly fly to the US, E+ on UA and DC S/G bonus 25% miles earned would make it useful,IMO. It also depends on what your alternatives are

Oh, and welcome to FT!

Indeed they are although in fairness they still have more room than they had before they introduced more room if you get what I mean  . More than the 31" United offer in the back. AA are still a pretty good option for legroom.

If you phone up UA reservations, you can get pre-assigned  E+ seating.
