Massive job cuts at bmi

BBC website reports 1500 redundancies, 33% of staff!
Also, to switch to an all airbus fleet, 737s packed off to baby.

BMI Plans Painless Job Cuts

The UK's second largest airline, bmi British Midland, confirmed today that it is planning to reduce the size of its work force but insisted that it has no intention of making employees redundant...

FT.com is reporting a few additional items:

- bmi baby investigating opening base at a London airport

Quote from FT.com: "We need a stronger base (for BMIbaby) in the UK," said Sir Michael [Bishop]. "We must go to the south-east."

- if bmi baby is a success it may be demerged within a couple of years (no surprises there)

- bmi in negotiation with Airbus for up to 8 A319 aircraft.
